A new study says Indians are most depressed

IIPM Mumbai Campus

Indians are among the world's most depressed. According to a World Health Organization-sponsored study, while around 9% of people in India reported having an extended period of depression within their lifetime, nearly 36% suffered from what is called Major Depressive Episode (MDE).

MDE is characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy and poor concentration, besides feeling depressed.

Lowest prevalence of MDE was in China(12%). The average age of depression in India is 31.9 years compared to 18.8 years in China, and 22.7 years in the US. The study, published in the BMC Medicine journal and based on interviews of more than 89,000 people in 18 different countries by 20 different researchers, says depression affects nearly 121 million people worldwide. It is the second contributor to shorter lifespan for individuals in the 15-44 age group. The percentage of respondents, who had lifetime MDE was higher in high-income (28.1%) than in low to middle-income (19.8%) countries. When it came to lifetime prevalence rates of depression, France (21%) and the US (19.2%) reported the highest rates of depression. Women are twice as likely to suffer depression as men and the loss of a partner, whether from death or divorce, was a main factor, the study reveals. WHO ranks depression as the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide and projects that by 2020, it will be the second leading cause.

Prof Bromet from State University of New York said, "This is the first study which compares depression and MDE across countries and cultures. Depression is a significant public-health concern across all regions of the world and is linked to social conditions."

A study based on the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health Survey Initiative has said that India has the highest rate of major depression in the world.

The study, ‘Cross-national epidemiology of DSM-IV major depressive episode,’ based on interviews of nearly 90,000 subjects across 18 countries with different income levels, was published in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Medicine by Biomed Central.

The average lifetime rates of depression, according to the study, were found to be 14.6 per cent in ten high income countries, and 11.1 percent in eight low- to middle-income countries. But lifetime incidents of what was identified as Major Depressive Episodes (MDE), were highest among Indians at 35.9 percent, while China was at the lowest at 12 per cent.

Average percentage of MDE was, however, considerably higher in high-income countries at 28.1 percent, compared to 19.8 percent in the low- to middle-income countries.

Mr Sibal then clarified that he had not doubted the potential of the Lokpal Bill; he had merely said that it cannot address problems other than corruption. "I want that the Lokpal Bill should be drafted asap. A tough bill. If you want to educate a child, Lokpal will not help. It is related to corruption. So we will bring such a bill that will get rid of corruption. We will sit with Anna Hazare and draft a good bill."

New Delhi, Apr 18: The Gandhian crusader Anna Hazare has written a letter to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and charged the telecom minister Kapil Sibal and the party leader Digvijay Singh of using anti-joint committee remarks about Lokpal panel. In reply to Hazare's letter, Mr Sibal rejected all allegations made by Hazare.

Kapil Sibal informed, "I never said civil society members succumbed to govt pressure."

Indians are most depressed as reported by WHO. Very sad to here this. I think somewhere our society is responsible for this. Our Indian society has a lot of double standards such as sometime to force their children to select a courses in which they have no interest, customs imposed on them and comparisons with others. Oh come on let them to decide what they like to do. In this way no can one become independent and till when parent can look after their children. Everyone is just included themselves in the race of showing off. This is major cause of depression at the end when you couldn't achieve it. In this way it continues to next generation and so on...
