IIPM :> Wipro’s IT services and product offerings

B-SCHOOL INDIA

POWERED BY IIPM
POWERED BY IIPMAs evidence of how brilliant the culture of competent dynamism is within Wipro, the ventures discussed above currently make up just about 8.5% of Wipro’s revenues, and 6% of its profi ts (before taxes). The rest of its revenue & profits come from Wipro’s IT services and product offerings. For a company which used to sell oil, currently Wipro is renowned as a world-class soft ware solutions provider, a business which started unsuccessfully with its word sheet processing package. Apart from a world class consulting team, Wipro India has successfully leveraged its alliances with different partners. While most Indian companies had a tendency to tap the high margin consulting market, Wipro has strived to provide end to end consulting solutions. A major step was the acquisition of Spectramind to create Wipro Spectramind in 2003. Now rechristened Wipro BPO, this company is one of the leading Indian BPO companies, providing CRM, back office transaction processing and industry specific solutions. Kaavya’s Opal might be down, but Premji’s Wipro has seriously got a life!...

TRIUMVIRATE AMBANIS, reliance’s famed fables! : IIPM

IIPM BUSINESS AND ECONOMY
Adjectives fail to describe the sheer audacity with which the Reliance Group has managed to grow not just in the markets, but also in the minds of shareholders. The late Dhirubhai Ambani managed to create a business empire that is incomparable to any other individual non-legacy Indian success story, both in size and in scale. Dhirubhai muscled Reliance’s way into the Indian capital markets in 1977 with a public issue of a whopping 28 lakh shares under the Reliance Textile Industries banner. Dhirubhai’s fable of being ruthless, cunning and shrewd spread thick and fast as he exploited opportunities much quicker than his peers. Dhirubhai rewrote the record books in Indian corporate history by defying established wisdom with every project that he undertook….

The global market for biometrics

IIPM PUBLICATION
The commercial uses of biometrics are especially bright for unmanned checks. For example, there is a prototype built for frequent flyers – an iris scan identifies the passenger and updates miles earned per flight without requiring the frequent flyer ID card. Employee attendance can also be easily taken care of through biometrics; eliminating ‘buddy punch-in’ tactics. Statistically, the global market for biometrics is poised to hit $3.6 billion in 2008 (Frost & Sullivan). “Security companies should invest in biometric technologies to offer more comprehensive product portfolio,” says Sapna Capoor, Frost & Sullivan. And with such rich revenue predictions, it seems to be one of the best times security companies have had since the Y2K bug hype. So finger up everybody!....

IIPM B & E (Recent protests against ‘wrongs’ is motivating and must continue)

IIPM Management Education
It might not at all be considered preposterous to label Rang De Basanti as a new genre of Indian cinema, as Aamir Khan’s piece de resistance has definitely touched the simmering discontent of the Indian middle class psyche. The deepest desire to rise against the system’s unfairness seems to be gaining ground. For all the voices that go hoarse citing ‘Who cares, I don’t’, it was a counter-thesis to see the sudden rise in national support for Medha Patkar’s campaign (Aamir himself being a clear and present supporter), Bhopal Gas Tragedy victims’ week-long hunger strike, farmers’ anti-WTO protests, public outcry against MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) for its corrupt demolition drive, and the Jessica Lall case retrial….

IIPM R&P (When hero-worshipping gets a little too literal!)

Surfing on the tide of success and basking in the adulation and fanfare may have become routine for Bollywood stars, but to be confronted with Brobdingnagian posters of oneself at every crossroad and escalated to the pedestal of a demigod, and an entire troop of devout worshippers, one has got to be staring down the corridors of celebritydom certainly! And it appears that the south film industry scores heavily here. Slogans, fanatical fans who shave their heads and offer orisons for the success of the stars’ movies or tiding through difficult times, are usual fare to put up with in Bollywood, but the hysterical reaction evoked by the ups and downs in the lives of the southern super stars are unparalleled….

IIPM : Too fast, too furious

Talk of designer cars in India and the name of Dilip Chabaria cannot be far behind. His DC Design (DC) has handcrafted more than 450 vehicles, including Amitabh Bachchan’s van, and even fulfilled auto needs for brand imagery of companies like Orange, Videocon, CNBC and NDTV. Auto customization could range from highlighting and designing your car interiors and exteriors, exotic paint jobs in multiple hues and designs, customised modifications and prototypes, upgrading performance by added enhancers and innovative in-car audio and video systems, et al….

The latest kid on this block is Autopsyche. In the company’s own words “…we are just a bunch of car crazy freaks, who come up with random weird ideas for your vehicles and decide to implement all of those customisations on your beloved babies and make you pay through your noses for it.”

If that’s not by ‘design,’ what is?

AMD’s smart. But, don’t underestimate Intel

IIPM Business & Economy

The authors of Hebrew Bible were not writing about the present day semiconductor IT sector when they penned the “David and Goliath” saga, centuries ago. But, the legend has more than come alive in the 21st century for AMD and Intel. AMD is playing ‘David’ to Intel’s ‘Goliath’ might. AMD’s remarkable rise is reflecting on its revenue and profitability. And it’s time for Intel to rise from its deep slumber of 12 months and smell the fresh coffee. Recently, AMD posted its results for the first quarter of 2006, recording sales of $1.3 billion and a net profit of $185 million. This year’s sales figures are 71% higher than last years. In contrast, Intel’s first quarter results indicated a 38% dip in profits. Indicates anything to you?...
