IIPM DELHI SESSION ON WORK LIFE BALANCE

'BALANCE' is all it takes to live a life worth living and give meaning to it. Keeping this credo in mind, IIPM put together an interactive and resourceful event together for the Management graduates. The event started on 11th November with early morning prayers at Bangla Sahib. A steamy cup of tea with a newspaper ( a pink one this time!) marked the beginning of the session. The students learnt some quick and unique ways on how to flip through business news on a daily basis. Mr. Anuj then presented the students with an entirely new perspective on how to use the library. He also had an in-depth discussion while giving valuable tips for enhancing reading skills, a skill he believes one should maintain life long.

The back to back activities left the students famished. The students then shared a meal together while Prof. Gita Negi provided some 'food for thought' on maintaining work life balance. This was followed by a session by Prof. Anirudh Sharma on what it takes to be successful at work and especially on the ideal approach to the campus placements. He maintained that Passion, along with necessary skills and a great attire are eminent to secure a position in one's dream company. Anuridh Sir maintained an informal and innovative demeanor to help the students understand the nuances of placements. He made them realize the importance of a clear cut self-evaluation before putting a foot into the interview room. It takes consistent efforts and an open mind to develop the 'GUT'. Prof. Ranjan Paul, conducted an elaborative session based on Jack Welch's Bestselling Book 'Straight from the Gur.' He explained the key factors in the book so well that students got the most 9n-depth understanding on Jack Welch's reign at GE and his work ethics. Prof. Paul followed a step by step approach to unravel the overall message to the students. The next session was facilitated by Prof. Joydip Dutta Gupta, Dean Academics-IIPM New Delhi. He revealed to the students his fun-loving and casual dimension while conducting the session on the 'Lessons for Life.' Explaining life as it unfolds in years to come and what should be the students' subsequent approach to follow, Prof. Joydip Dutta left an indelible mark on the minds of the students. He really helped students connect with life through this wonderful session.

To address this, a two hour session was conducted by Mr. Manish. M. Sanwal, General Manager, Indian Sub Continent LVMH Watch & Jewellery India Pvt. Ltd. He began by giving the audience an insight on the history and details of the current condition of luxury market in India. The buoyant participation of seven groups from IIPM New Delhi & IIPM Noida made this exclusive session a highly educational one. Also, the immense exposure the students got from an experienced person like Mr. Sanwal was immense. Incidentally, it was Mr. Sanwal who spearheaded the brand Tag Heuer's journey in India. While Mr. Sanwal paid close attention to all the strategies of the seven groups on a launch strategy for the TAGHEUER Link watch, he observed that while creativity is a mandatory requirement in Marketing, one should not compromise on practicality. He then discussed with each group on how to convert creative suggestions into practical and implementable ideas. Truly, this session left each one in the audience highly impressed and the students learnt the most insightful details of the luxury market in India.

Sitting cosily in a brilliant blue office smacking of success, Prof. Chaudhuri talks to Janani Ganesan about his latest book Cult that he has co-authored with A Sandeep, strategic management professor at IIPM

Excerpts From An Interview

What is Cult about?
It is for the CEOs. Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch was the first book on management. Thorns to Competition was the second one for mid-level managers. Cult completes the tool kit. I call it leadership and business strategy ruthlessly redefined. At this level, goody-goody things don’t work.

So if one reads all the three books, are they likely to become successful leaders?
I wrote believing that people will benefit. Not to fool them.

The cover page of Cult reads: “Fire the guy who suggests CSR, don’t have a woman CEO, and don’t invest in R&D”. Could you explain this?
We have redefined 36 key issues that CEOs have to face. Women can be good CEOs, but research shows that announ cing a woman CEO has led to 664 percent more stock market price erosion than announcing a male CEO. This book is from a shareholder’s wealth maximisation perspective. It has nothing to do with what I personally think. Women do better in targetled roles. But at a CEO level, it is open-ended. It is not a nine-to-five job and women have many other responsibilities. As for CSR, many companies worldwide have started dumping it. It erodes profits and shareholders’ wealth. Do CSR only for publicity. It is the government’s job to do good for the society. What a businessman can do is create more jobs. As for R&D, companies that invest the most in R&D get the least returns.

So why do management books sell like hot cakes?
Because there are a lot of individuals who feel like they haven’t achieved much.

People don’t like to be preached to. What is the tone that you adopt in your books?
I use a lot of examples. I don’t say anything directly.

Is there any Indian author that you like?
Indians don’t write. Only semi-successful people write books. A multibillionaire never does, nor does he allow anybody else to write on him.

Have you read Suhel Seth’s Get To The Top?
No.

How did you manage to write at this pace? Thorns to Competition came out just three months ago.
I have been writing these books for a few years now. I write books simultaneously.

What is your take on India’s FDI policy?
It is inevitable. India chose the FDI route. There are countries which did not go this route, like South Korea. Twenty years ago, we had a choice. We could have decided to make Indian products world class and then open up the market. But now, let’s capture the Indian market first and beat Wal-Mart at their game. Once someone pointed out that in the Forbes list of billionaires, there are many Indians, but in the Fortune list of 100 top brands, there is not one Indian brand. He asked me, “How do you guys become billionaires without making brands?” Nincompoops have become billionaires here, and if Wal- Mart beats them, I will be happy. Indian companies don’t understand marketing or branding. They only understand bribing.

You are a fan of Ernesto Che Guevara, but you still embrace the corporate life and promote it. Isn’t there a clash?
Corporations are ruling our lives, and I am a part of that. While my previous book explains how to survive in the corporate jungle, it also says that we need to be aware that we are forced to function as irrational beings.

A new fashion trend ends up offending Chavakkad elderly

The youth perceive it as a new trend in fashion, the oldies find it to be offensive and vulgar. Sometimes this happens with certain new fashion trends. And it happens all across the world and not only in India. But it's also true that sometimes some people's perception– which forms the basis of their appreciation or opposition to a certain trend– verges on the ludicrous.

Some elderly people in Chavakkad in Thrissur district of Kerala are objecting to youngsters wearing low-rise jeans that exposes their undergarments. This, they think, is obscenity.

As anyone would know, low-rise jeans is a rage worldwide these days and youngsters are wearing them as the latest fashion statement. But for conservative people of Chavakkad this fashion trend is tantamount to obscenity.

Even the local police think so. So they took the complaints very seriously and started hunting for the 'crazy' adolescents. It should be kept in mind that Thrissur is often hailed as Kerala’s cultural capital. And the famous Guruvayoor Srikrishna temple is just stone’s throw away from Chavakkad. Although the low-rise jeans trend has been around for a few years now, youngsters in Chavakkad have only adopted it recently. When the trend spread, the public, especially women and school authorities, declared it a public nuisance and complained to the police.

“Women, school authorities and general public have filed so many complaints against this trend. Youths wear ultra low-rise jeans and do not tuck-in their shirts, which are usually short. So while boarding a bus or holding on to the overhead railing, their inner wear is exposed. This amounts to indecency,” says Chavakkad SI Abdul Muneer.

Having received many such complaints, the police swung into action and started looking for boys and girls wearing low-rise jeans. Although most of the boys were let off lightly after a warning, the police detained a few and imposed a fine of Rs100 on each of them. On the first day, more than 50 persons were fined while they were hanging around bus stops.

Police say that most of the “fanatically fashionable” youth are not very well educated and most of them come from low-income families.

Shylan, famous young poet and author of three books has different views on the issue though. “Fashion is youth’s right. It changes from time to time. Low-rise jeans is not a Chavakkad fashion only. It is an international trend which is followed in most parts of Kerala. Youths of northern Kerala are fashionable too irrespective of their income or social status. We see more men’s shops in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts than in other parts of the state.

“Although these districts are backward in education and economy in comparisons with certain other districts like Ernakulam, they spend more money on fashion. It is desirable to see these trends as mere fashion. So, we should refrain from taking it as an anti-social or immoral gesture,” he puts forth.

The Delhi High Court’s revision of Section 377 was one of the strongest portents of progressive India. Deepak Kashyap, Masters in Psychology from Bristol University and practicing counselor for homosexuals in Mumbai, explains how the law has helped to make the world a better place to live in.

Being a psychologist by profession, I’ve seen how the new ruling changed the lives of homosexuals. Now, many gays come out and seek help. Previously, there weren’t very many who would do so despite facing various forms of hostility. Besides, we as counselors or psychologists could not reach out to them either, because the law did not permit us to do so. So, the High Court’s decision has unquestionably been beneficial to this community.

On the question whether or not the law has helped change the mindset of people, I would say not, since I have been involved with gay rights for years, and I still don’t see much change there. However, this is not to deny the fact that our society is beginning to accept homosexuals. Taking my personal experience into account, I had always been open about the fact that I’m gay; years ago, gays were only seen as fancy items where people would give us that unusual stare, but now I see that it’s much more easy and comfortable to be a part of this society. I’d also add that it takes a long, long while for an existing culture to change. Complete acceptance of homosexuality would require a culture change, which will take time.

The level of acceptance also varies from city to city. For example, in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune etc people are a lot more open minded and have a higher level of acceptance. The other cities would take roughly 10-15 more years to accept the law and accept homosexuals as normal beings.

On the future of gay rights, the legal issues are still pending at the Supreme Court. I wouldn’t be able to tell exactly why it’s taking so long, but here are some leads. The last time this case was brought forth, there were 16 organisations challenging the High Court’s decision. And out of those sixteen, 99 per cent were religious organisations. It’s very strange actually; before the government came in, there was religion owning our bodies and before that there were the kings owning our bodies. The question is whether my body belongs to the state, to the religious heads or to myself. My body belongs to me and I have the right to express my bodily desires the way I want to unless I’m hurting someone. I’m pretty sure that the Supreme Court will decide in favour of legalising homosexuality. We have a constitution which guarantees dignity to every citizen and the same must be our right too. There will very soon be a time when homosexuals will stay comfortably along with everyone in the society, not only in some cities but in all parts of our country.

De-Educate the Children: How countries distort facts in their school textbooks

Recently, a leading media house reported that even after four long decades since the 1971 Indo-Pak war, schools in Pakistan (for grades 9 and 10) still continue to teach their students conspiracy theories involving India, Russia and US, misrepresenting their role in creating Bangladesh, at the same time ignoring the issues related to Pakistan Army's violence (rapes and murder against the Mukti Bahini and the genocide of Bengalis) on people in the erstwhile East Pakistan. Apparently, the topic of "role of Hindu teachers" in the fall of East Pakistan is also covered.

This practice of using controversial and politically motivated syllabi is not only confined to Pakistan, but is rampant across the globe. As recent as in May 2010, students of Texas schools were being taught “how American ideals benefit the world but organisations such as the UN could be a threat to personal freedom.” Those schools also were deliberately ensuring that icons like Thomas Jefferson and their contributions were not included in the teachings. For the uninitiated, Jefferson was the first one to talk about the separation of church from the State. Even Japan draws up a similar tale. Government approved Japanese history secondary school textbooks do not mention anything about the deeds of the Empire of Japan during WWII. As per a Japanese textbook, “Japan liberated South East Asia from its western colonists when invaded during Second World War.” South Koreans have protested such statements in the past.
Likewise, four years back, the Texas based Vedic Foundation and the American 'Hindu Education Foundation' filed a complaint to California's Curriculum Commission about sixth grade history textbooks alleging that the portrayal of Indian history and Hinduism in the books was biased against Hinduism itself. The foundation demanded that the portrayal be revised according to the views of Hinduism and Indian history shared by most Hindus and Indians.

On the contrary, the action taken by a Saudi-funded Islamic school is an example for other nations to replicate. Three years back, a Saudi-funded Islamic school removed controversial passages from school textbooks, which allegedly branded other faiths as being "worthless".
History text books have been the most sought-after battleground. From distorting facts in order to give a better image of their nation and sidelining their brutality over people to tweaking the history for either degrading or upgrading a special class of society, education in modern era is being used as a tool for inducing customised perception among pupils.
However, with Internet, social networking sites and other knowledge portals, it’s really tough for these curriculum designers to hide the truth for long. Distortion of historical facts, done either deliberately or out of ignorance, results in adverse effects on society. If Germans were not to teach happenings in the Nazi era, Americans the Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Brits their atrocities in India, their own populace would not attain the intellectual maturity required for global interactions and leadership.

Business is marketing and marketing is a lot about advertising। Not just our business vision, but our advertising also should be responsible. After all, it pays to be responsible. Last month, Nivea For Men launched an advertisement for its cream, which showed a short haired, black model tossing the head of a black man with an Afro-American hair and beard. That head represented his ‘before- Nivea self’. The ad ended with the caption, “Look Like You Give A Damn…. Re-Civilize Yourself”. The ad did not go down well with the viewers as it alluded that Afro-Americans were not civilized, and people decided to not buy Nivea if it believed in such racist stuff. Nivea realized its irresponsible behaviour and quickly posted an apology on its Facebook page and withdrew the advertisement.

Advertising is a potent tool and needs to be used very carefully. Cadbury too tread on the danger line when the ad for its ‘Bliss’ range of dark chocolates ran into slight trouble this year. The chocolate bars were promoted with a strapline, “Move over Naomi, there is a new diva in town”. The black model Naomi Campbell did not take it too well and said she found it insulting, hurtful and racist. The ads were pulled out and Cadbury had to apologize to Naomi.

A little bit of sensitivity goes a long way in building a strong brand reputation. With competition increasing and with the consumer confused about product quality, these are the cues on the basis of which a consumer builds a perception about your product. Marketers should be careful about their image.

Banking on farms: Mr. S. Sridhar, Competence Development Facilitator, ING Vysya Bank Ltd, delivering the BL Club lecture at the Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM).

Indian agriculture is undergoing rapid transformation and low volume agriculture is giving way to high-value agri-business.

Indian banks are increasingly focusing across the supply chain and hence, youngsters, whether they become part of the banking system or just remain as customers, will be partnering the growth of the country, explained Mr S. Sridhar, Competence Development Facilitator, ING Vysya Bank Ltd.

Delivering the Business Line Club lecture on “Role of banking in agricultural sector” sponsored by Syndicate Bank for the students of Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM), he remarked that banks must churn out products to meet the needs of various components of the supply chain and that would be the simplest approach to address various challenges faced by banks at present in agriculture lending.

Milestones

Speaking about some of the milestones reached by Indian agriculture sector, he said that the sharp rise in foodgrain production during India's Green Revolution of the 1960s enabled the country to achieve self-sufficiency in foodgrains and stave off the threat of famine.

“Till late 50s, India was a starving nation and we were asking international agencies for food aid. However, the Green Revolution changed all that. This was followed by the White Revolution (milk) and the Pink Revolution (onions).

“Agricultural intensification in the 70s to 80s saw a decline in food prices and reduced rural poverty. However, for financial institutions, agriculture sector was not a priority sector and they were giving loans when farmers never needed it. All this changed when in 1982, NABARD was set up to facilitate credit flow for promotion and development of agriculture,” he said.

Mr Sridhar provided information to students on some of the special products launched by banks in the past including the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) which proved to be “game changers.”

He further said that KCC provided adequate and timely support to the farmers for their short-term credit needs for cultivation of crops.

“A host of positive changes are powering the agriculture growth and there will be a significant growth in non-urban credit and hence, be part of this growth story,” Mr Sridhar added.

‘SyndYuva' and ‘SyndVidya', the two products of Syndicate Bank for the youth, were introduced to the students. Dr V. G. Dhanakumar, Director, IIPM, welcomed the gathering and introduced the guests.

Dr S. John Mano Raj, Chairperson (post-graduate programme), was present.

From Arbaaz Khan and Arindam Chaudhuri to Anant Mahadevan and Aishwarya Narkar, they all said that receiving a National Film Award from President Pratiba Patil Friday was a "fantastic moment".

Dadasaheb Phalke award winner veteran Tamil filmmaker Balachander said it is never too late to get an award.

"I feel happy. I`m asked whether the award has come late, and I don`t think it`s ever late to get an award. Whenever it comes, it is an honour. I am inspired to do more films," he said the director of hits like "Ek Duuje Ke Liye" and "Sindhu Bhairavi".

Hindi blockbuster "Dabangg" starring Salman Khan won the best popular film award.

"It feels great and it has been a fantastic journey," Arbaaz told IANS when asked to describe the journey of his debut production "Dabangg" from box office hits to popular awards to national awards.

Arindam Chaudhuri`s production "Do Dooni Char" won the best Hindi film award and he said: "I feel lucky. Awards are an added incentive."

"We have just bought the rights of a book called `Lashkar`. It`s a best seller and I hope the film will also be a best seller. Nothing has been finalised yet, we have just started scripting," added the producer whose "The Last Lear" and "Faltu" had won national awards in different categories.

Actress Aishwarya Narkar, who is currently seen in Star Plus show "Dor" as protagonist Avni`s mother, produced "Champions", which won the best film on social issues award.

"Child labour and child education are an important issues. Government is making efforts to erase child labour but as a citizen of our country we should also do something. And that is the reason I decided to produce the film," she told IANS.

Anant Mahadevan, who has completed 30 years in showbiz, said that it had been long and tough journey and finally he got national award for his film "Mee Sindhutai Sapkal", a biopic on Sindhutai Sapkal, known as the mother of orphans.

"The degree of cinematic success I have received with `Mee Sindhutai Sapkal` is great, but the greatest has yet to come. Now I am planning to make a film on Gaur Hari Dastan, a freedom fighter," he said.

The Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) has scored consistently high in this year survey. Domino's asked "Hungry Kya" and McDonald's appealed to the Indian palate by abandoning beef and introducing aloo tikki burgers - examples to prove that the Indian market has a distinct identity and even global brands must modify their selling strategy, says management educator and writer Arindam Chaudhuri.

Companies must understand the cultural sensitivities of a market and identity needs of a consumer in emerging economies like India, China and rest of the developing world to sell their products and stay ahead of competition, Prof. Chaudhuri said.

"Western markets models don't always work here. Organisations are more aggressive in the west; they can use comparative marketing (comparing one product with another). But to create an understanding about a product and market it in India, a multinational firm often has to modify its strategy, campaign and, if necessary, innovate the product to suit the Indian market and culture," Prof Arindam told IANS.

IIPM Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri and his wife Rajita Chaudhuri have explored competition in the Indian market with examples and ways to trounce rivals with an effective mix of advertising, campaigning and aggression in a new book, "Thorns to Competition". The book will arrive in bookstores by the end of this month.

The management honcho cited campaigns for brands like Surf, Domino's and McDonald's to explain "Indianisation of global marketing strategies".

"The global campaign of the detergent brand was very nicely modified to bring the family scene in India while the Italian pizza brand introduced Hinglish (with its slogan 'Hungry Kya') to appeal to Indians. McDonald's has introduced veg burgers for India and do not sell beef burgers here. In McDonald's case, it is not the campaign that the company runs, but the products they serve determine its success," Chaudhuri said.

Several global companies have been forced to come to India and look at the country differently," he said. "The Indian market has a distinct identity," Arindam said.

Arindam Chaudhuri, who manages the Planman Group and the IIPM, a popular management school with branches across the country and abroad, is the author of two books, "The Great Indian Dream" and "Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch".

"In India, family values are very strong - with closer leaning towards the family. It is an ethos. Showing happy families have always worked. We appreciate human emotions more than animated emotions- the western stereotype," Chaudhuri said.

IIPM is a prominent B school, honoured different individuals from the the world of literature and journalism at its campus in Kolkata on Tuesday.

As part of the honouring, the Surama Chowdhury Memorial Award 2011 will be conferred to three Bagladeshi intellectuals – Akhtar Ur Jamal Ilyas , Emabdul haq Milan ,Selina Hossain besides one Indian Prafulla Roy at the 3rd Bangladesh Book Fair at Dhaka, Moloy Chadhuri , Director, IIPM said.

Along with this seven more awards were given away in varied fields like healthcare, film making and sports.

Most of the awards carried a gold medal and Rs 1 lakh as cash.

“These awards convey the philosophy of the institute. We want to reach out to the students and the masses across the nation by appreciating the effort of people who have contributed extensively in their respectiver fields,” he said.

At the award event on Tuesday, Bengali poet Sankha Ghosh was felicitated with IIPM – Gour Kishore GHosh Memorial Award.

Bengali poet Joy Goswami was honoured with Michael Madhusudan Dutta Memorial Award.

For journalism, Ratindev Sengupta of Bartaman Bengali newspaper was awarded with IIPM-Barun Sengupta Memorial Award while the editor of The Statesman, Ravindra Kumar, was felicitated with IIPM-Award for Excellence in Journalism for his contribution as columnist and journalist.

Phani Gopal Bhattacharya received Excellence in Healthcare award.

IIPM-Satyajit Ray award was given to Anjan Das.

Former Indian Football captain Baichung Bhutia was named for the IIPM Award for excellence in football, but he was absent.

He will receive the award on Sept.1 from the campus of IIPM here.

Spam Emails: An Emerging Problem

Are spam-mails gaining the upper hand in our war against them?
Unsolicited bulk e-mail has not only become a part of regular e-mails, but has also emerged as a nerve-wracking problem for businesses and individuals alike. As per a conservative estimate, spam accounts for nearly 83 per cent of all e-mail traffic. It is estimated to cost around $10 billion to American business firms. The objectives of sending spam has also increased along with the increase in frequency of the same. From pornographic solicitations to plain fishing, account holders are bombarded with all kinds of spam for different objectives.

Are we losing the war against spam email? A report by Commtouch Software Ltd released on Jan 2010 said that more than 183 billion spam emails are generated everyday.

Strangely, much spam is also politically motivated. SonicWall estimated that the number of spam that had mentioned a political figure/issue in their subject row crossed the mark of 5 billion in a period of one month during Nov'08 American Presidential Elections. Accounts were flooded with spam declaring to contain “Obama Sex Video!!!” and it was astonishingly generated from “infonews@obama.com.” The email further read as “Sensation!!! US Senator for Illinois Barack Obama in 2007 travelled to Ukraine and had sex action with many Ukrainian girls! You may view this private porno in a flash video. Download and view now. Please send this news to your friends! Obama, it’s not the right choice!!!” But then, as expected, the email had no sex video but a Trojan virus that got downloaded during the process. Even during the Bush-Cheney campaign, bulk spam was generated with a link back to the official campaign site georgewbush.com and another link pointing to an anti-Kerry ad that alleged him being "wrong on defence." A Conservative group grassfire.org sent more than 300,000 e-mails with a link to an online ad where John Kerry and Ted Kennedy were shown as "opponents to conservative values." Similar tactics were also used by an anti-Bush liberal group (moveon.org).

Spam is denting bottom-lines considerably. According to a study conducted in 2009 by Nucleus Research Inc., managing spam costs American corporations more than $70 billion annually and leads to productivity loss of around $700 per employee per year. There is an urgent need for a universal solution regarding spam. Apart from the above mentioned productivity and cash loss, it easily dents profiles of individuals and even causes indirect loss in international trade. While at the individual level, there is little that can be done, and while email portals like Google, Yahoo, MSN can help in blocking these spam emails, unless nations come together in organising a coordinated action against spam sending entities and in shutting them down, we'll lose the fight!

Anna Hazare: We will keep fighting till Jan Lokpal Bill is passed

Anna Hazare's fast demanding a strong Lokpal entered the fifth day on Saturday with his team saying they were ready to talk to the government but no such communication channels have been opened.

Hazare came to the podium at around 10am as supporters started pouring in Ramlila Maidan where he launched his protest yesterday after coming out of Tihar Jail.

The 73-year-old anti-corruption crusader alleged the funds in government treasuries were being threatened not by thieves but from those guard it and the country is being threatened by these traitors.

"Why should we fight? The funds in government treasuries are ours. The treasuries are not threatened by thieves but by those who guard it. The country is not betrayed by enemies but by these traitors," the Gandhian said.

He said he has lost three-and-half kg in the last four days. "I feel a little weak. But there is nothing to worry about it. The fight will go on till we get a strong Lokpal," Hazare said in his brief address to the gathering.

His close associates Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia said the team was ready to talk to the government on the issue of Lokpal Bill but no one has approached them.

"We are ready to talk to the government but there is no communication from their side. Where should we go to talk and whom should we talk to?" Kejriwal and Sisodia said.

Hazare had yesterday raised the political stakes by giving a deadline to the government to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill by August 30 failing which he would continue his fast "till my last breath".

Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare addresses supporters at Ramlila Ground

After three days in jail, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare reached Ramlila Maidan and addressed thousands of supporters urging them to continue the fight for a strong Lokpal Bill.

Anna was received by cheering crowds, many of who had been waiting for days.

Earlier in the day, just past the Tihar Jail gates he addressed the crowd outside , raising his hand to the air and shouting "Victory to Mother India" and declaring the fight against corruption would continue whether he was "alive or not" before slowly winding his way in a truck decorated with flags through massive crowds.

Looking fit, the 73-year old Gandhian who is on day four of his hunger strike, urged his supporters outside jail to make sure that the torch of the movement against corruption is not extinguished. He said that India gained freedom in 1947, but the freedom movement had actually begun long time back meaning that the march to end corruption will be a long drawn one.

"We got freedom in 1947. Now the second freedom struggle has begun on August 16. A revolution has started. The fight against corruption will continue whether I am alive or not," he said as the hundreds of supporters waiting for him since early morning cheered and clapped.

Anna said, "After 64 years of independence, we still haven't achieved complete freedom."

"The fight is far from over, it has just begun," he added.

Many supporters had been there overnight and some had offered prayers to the god. Others chanted "the whole country is Anna".

Greeted by rains, the procession made slow progress as Anna waved to his supporters on his way towards Rajghat where he paid obeisance to Mahatma Gandhi before proceeding to Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate and from there to the Ramlila ground, the protest venue.

Hazare supporters accompanied the procession waving the tricolour while he accepted greetings from people gathered on either side of the road in West Delhi.

The improvised vehicle had a huge umbrella to protect Hazare and his close aides from the pounding rain. Apart from walking along with Hazare's vehicle, the supporters followed him on bikes, jeeps and cars.

The procession affected vehicular traffic in and around the Tihar Jail premises including in Janakpuri, Mayapuri and Hari Nagar in West Delhi.

The tireless Hazare was greeted by the supporters with garlands and bouquets at various intersections en-route his procession which was marked by chants of 'Anna' and "Vande Mataram".

Children, housewives and others were seen standing on their balconies and rooftops to have a glimpse of Hazare and the procession.

Thousands of people, many of them school children, waited at Ramlila Ground despite rains to support Anna Hazare.

With the many tricolours, patriotic songs playing in the background and loud slogans and the sun playing hide and seek, it was like a carnival at the sprawling ground in central Delhi where Hazare will continue his fast that began Tuesday.

There were hundreds of school children in the crowd, some who had bunked their classes to come out in support of the 74-year-old Hazare.

"I have come here to support Annaji and we will get the civil society version of Lokpal bill passed come what may," said Prateek Babar, a student of Rajkiya Sarvodya Vidhyalaya School in west Delhi.

As it started pouring heavily, some people started dancing.

"When the government could not stop us, this downpour is nothing. I am here to witness history in the making," said Rehan Singh, a Class 9 student who had a tricolour painted on his face.

Authorities looked worried though.

"The marquee put up at the Ramlila ground is not waterproof. The ground is already wet. If it rains more, it will be difficult to handle," said Deputy Mayor Anil Sharma.

Anna's exit from jail today, took place after two days of hard negotiations with the government and the two sides agreeing that Hazare will undertake a fast for 15 days at the Ramlila Ground subject to certain conditions.

Hazare got from Delhi Police the spacious Ramlila Ground for his fast instead of the smaller J P Park.

Significantly, Team Hazare made it clear that his fast would not be a fast-unto-death and he will be on hunger strike only till his health permits.

73-year-old Hazare, in a video shot inside Tihar Jail, said the protests by "all my brothers and sisters, the elderly and the children" is giving him a "new energy" for his fast.

He said people were fed up of corruption and the government should not take long to bring a strong Lokpal Bill.

Hazare, who is on the third day of his fast inside Tihar jail, also said he is not "tired" at all.

Coming out in support of Anna Hazare, Indian-Americans have appealed to the Indian government to take serious steps to curb the menace of corruption in the country.

"We NRIs want to remove corruption out of India. We support Anna Hazare's efforts to eradicate the corruption, pass Lokpal Bill and declare black money as national assets," said Dnyanoba Kendre, a yoga teacher from Pennsylvania.

Of all the protests in India in recent times, this is the most legitimate and at the grass root-level, that can change the fate of the country, said Rangarajan, a student from the University of Maryland.

Another student, Umang Agarawal, said they are emailing Supreme Court en mass directly to take suo motu action and save the nation.

"More than Indians fighting against corruption, it seems government is fighting against people who are fighting against corruption. This is going to be one of the watershed moments of Indian history," said Vibhash Jha, a PhD student at the University of Maryland.

Indian-Americans from in and around Washington for the third day held a demonstration in front of the Indian embassy here. Similar events in support of Hazare are being reported from various parts of the country as well.

A large number of Indian-Americans held a similar protest demonstration outside the Indian Consulate in Houston.

"We NRI in Houston feel connected to the movement in India and are expressing support in several forms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, websites in addition to their presence in local gatherings around apartment club houses, public parks and other community places," said Raghava R Solipuram.

Shocked and saddened by the arrest of Hazare and his supporters, Non-Resident Indians for Secular and Harmonious India (NRI-SAHI) said Indian-Americans support the demand of Team Anna to bring every one under the Jan Lok Pal Bill.

"We demand the government of India keep its promise and promulgate an effective Anti-Corruption Bill," NRI-SAHI said.

In a statement, Atlanta-based US Hindu Alliance strongly condemned the measures taken by the Indian government against the peaceful and democratic anti-corruption movement led by Hazare.

"The right to speak freely and the right to protest peacefully have been earned by the people of India after a prolonged struggle which involved the sacrifices of millions of its people.

"Hindus around the world cannot remain silent spectators when the government snatches away the fruits of India's freedom movement and attempts to create a political environment which has all the hallmarks of a police state," it said.

Nobel Laureate Mohan Munasinge and Lord Meghnad Desai came down to hand over the first edition of the 7 crore IIPM Rabindranath Tagore International Prize which was won by Ramapada Chowdhuri and six others.

Mohan Munasinghe and Lord Meghnad Desai along with IIPM’s Founder Director Dr Malay Chaudhuri and Dr NR Chatterjee handed over the first Rabindranath Tagore International Prize to Author Ramapada Chowdhuri for his classic work ‘Banpalashir Padabali’.

Dr Malay Chaudhuri announced, “We want to break the western monopoly on awards. The Nobel Prize for literature/economics has not always gone to great writers/economists. The Peace Prize has been, in recent times, given to people who have committed genocide. The Nobel Prize for literature this year will fetch the winner 1.08 million euros. Last year, the amount was 1 million euros. IIPM wanted to match that and make a real impact. IIPM’s Surama Chaudhuri Memorial International Award for Literature and Journalism is accompanied by an amount of $100,000. Indeed the prize moneys are big but does it really make the award as big?

Dr. Chaudhuri was candid about it as he said, “Well, I do not believe that money alone can decide the worth of an award. An award acquires prestige if it is consistently given to deserving people. This prestige is built over time. If our selection is proper and research based, the awards will be coveted by people all over the world over a period of the next few decades.” The coming years will surely decide if IIPM's initiatives will become globally as big as the Nobel, for now its time to celebrate the fact that an Indian has had the courage to institute a prize as big as the Nobel in value. In a country with the highest number of billionaires, that it comes from an educationist is another aspect to cheer about.

Delhi Police arrested Anna Hazare: India Against Corruption

Anna Hazare courted arrest after being detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Mayur Vihar ahead of his indefinite fast on Tuesday.

Senior officers of Delhi Police reached Anna Hazare's flat early in the morning and informed him that he could not leave his home. However, Hazare turned down the request following which he was detained.

"We have detained him as he did not budge from his position of defying prohibitory orders," police official said.

Anna in his addresses to the nation before his arrest asked his supporters not to stop the agitation. He urged the protesters to remain peaceful.

He added: "I appeal to you that let there be no violence in this movement. I also appeal to you, young and old alike, to give eight days of your life to the nation - if necessary for a jail bharo andolan."

Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia were also taken into preventive custody by the Delhi Police.

"This is exactly what happened during emergency. Emergency has revisited the country. This detention is unconstitutional and undemocratic," said Kiran Bedi while courting arrest at Raj Ghat.

According to sources, Anna is being taken to Officers' mess, Civil Lines in Delhi.

Ahead of the proposed fast by the Gandhian, a group of people had thronged the east Delhi apartment where Hazare was staying to pledge their support to his protest.

Security personnel, including some in plain clothes and some from the special branch, were deployed around the apartment premise.

Around 500 police personnel have been deployed from early morning itself after the city police imposed Section 144 around the park, police sources said.

Late Monday, at least 50 supporters of Anna Hazare were detained at Jai Prakash Narain Park, the venue of the anti-graft crusader's planned fast, for defying prohibitory orders clamped in the area.

The supporters of the Gandhian were taken in a police bus to a nearby police station, police said.

Meet Anjali Raj, 18, Madrasa Topper

It irks Anjali Raj, 18, no end when someone pronounces Phulwari Sharief, the Patna suburb where she lives, with seen (S) rather than sheen (Sh). In parts of eastern India, there’s no dearth of people who do so. In fact, after repeated attempts, she has barely managed to get her parents to pronounce Sharief right. Living in a society where people cannot differentiate between these alphabets, life is never easy. And under the circumstances, you cannot help but appreciate the teenager’s command on the language. The credit goes to her madrasa education.

An alumnus of Madrasa Imad-ul-Uloom Khankah-e-Imadia of Patna city, Anjali topped Fauqania (Matriculation) exams in the non-Muslim category with 805 marks out of 1200. And if that were not enough, she is also a CBSE matriculate. Incidentally, she has done well in both. And most of all, she has made her father, Ajay Raj, a businessman involved in the milk trade, really proud and happy. That we came all the way from Delhi to interview her daughter brought visible pride on his face. I am sure that happiness will last many a lifetime.

He says: “She has been interviewed by many journalists here. But now her popularity has reached Delhi too. I made it a point to teach her Urdu. And look what wonders it has done. It brought you all the way from Delhi.”

Phulwari Sharief is a Muslim majority neighbourhood. It is therefore natural that Ajay has lots of Muslim friends. He always wanted his daughter to study Arabic and Urdu. But he did not know the way to go about it. But then, one fine morning, Waiz-ud-Din Rahman, Urdu teacher at the school where Anjali used to study, advised Ajay to get his daughter admitted to a madrasa. He also insisted that it will help her in the Civil Services exams.

As things turned out, neither Anjali nor her mother appeared particularly enthusiastic. Anjali always wanted to speak Urdu as fluently as her friends and she had acquired a few basics too. But to read in a madrasa was a different ball game and she was not game for it. “I did not like it initially. In fact, I protested hard when papa took me to a madrasa. But as he was adamant I had no choice,” she says. The father offered her a way out. He said that she would continue studying in the CBSE board and attend a madrasa too.

The madrasa she got admitted in was 20 km from her home. Now that created another problem. Anjali was categorical that she would not let her studies suffer because of this. Rahman, her teacher, waived off compulsory attendance.

So how was the first day at the madrasa for a student of an English medium school? “It was all new for me. I was very scared and was looking for excuses for not attending the madrasa. Although I knew all the sums in mathematics, I could not attempt a single one because of the terminologies that were in Urdu. I had done really well in mathematics all along and here I was not able to do a simple sum. It was all so embarrassing,” recalls Anjali. In fact, when she came out, she broke down and made up her mind that she would not return.

But then, Rahman came to her rescue. He told her that these were initial hiccups. The carrot of the Civil Services was again dangled before her and Anjali finally complied. Since her madrasa was quite far she would attend classes just a couple of times in a month. Yet she managed to do well. There are people who question the very basis of how marks are doled out in madrasa and Sanskrit board exams.

But all the negative talk has not daunted Anjali one bit. She is now all set to take the Maulvi (intermediate) exams, one eye firmly on making it to the Civil Services.

India: Facebook's 2nd biggest market

In a two-room shanty with no running water in northern Mumbai, Darshana Verma makes tea on a small stove. On a bench nearby, her 18-year-old son, Vishal, messages Facebook friends on the keypad of his Nokia smartphone.

"This is the Internet age," said the 36-year-old domestic helper, who spent more than half her $300 monthly income on Samsung Electronics Co and Nokia Oyj mobile phones for her children. "Facebook is there, all these things happen there now -- they make friends, maybe they can even find jobs there."

Cheaper Internet-ready phones may make India Facebook Inc's biggest market after the US next year with more than 50 million users, according to Nielsen Co. As Google Inc's rival social network also gains in popularity, companies including Pepsi Co are boosting Internet advertising to reach the 352 million children under age 15 who are coming online.

"There's a mob out there," said Tarun Abhichandani, group business director at IMRB International, part of WPP Group, the world's biggest ad agency. "India has a young demographic, and it's social networking that brings them online."

The number of active accounts in India jumped 85 per cent to 32 million this year, according to socialbakers.com, which tracks user data at the Palo Alto, California-based company. That's the world's third-biggest behind the 153 million in the US and 39.2 million in Indonesia.

Mobile handset sales in the world's second-fastest growing major economy will surpass 206 million units annually in 2014 from 175.9 million last year, Gartner Inc forecasts.

Liking MTV

Pepsi and Viacom Inc's MTV have been quick to tap the popularity of Facebook in the South Asian nation through promotions and contests. Their Indian pages have garnered 1.4 million and 2.9 million "likes," respectively.

"Indians want brands to communicate with them using social media," said a Nielsen report, adding that 60 per cent of Indian social-media users are "open" to being approached by brands.

Online advertising in India rose 26 per cent to $223 million in the year ended March, according to IMRB. Advertising on social networking sites grew as much as 65 per cent from the year before.

"The shift to online advertising is just starting to happen," Abhichandani said. "The number of Internet users here is on the rise and is going to keep rising for some time. Advertisers are realizing that."

Facebook opened an office in Hyderabad in southern India in September to serve users, advertisers and developers in the country and around the world, spokeswoman Kumiko Hidaka wrote in an e-mail. The company is trying to improve service by working with mobile partners and "building relationships with India's strong network of developers and entrepreneurs," she said.

China block

Facebook is blocked in China, the world's most-populous nation. The social-networking company has held talks with potential partners about how to gain a foothold in the country, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg in April.

China, the world's largest Internet market with more than 450 million Web users, bans pornography, gambling and content critical of the ruling Communist Party.

"Facebook has chosen to focus on open markets, rather than markets like China where there's censorship and control," said Foong King Yew, vice president of research at Gartner in Singapore. "India's the biggest of those. It's rapidly growing. It's an untapped market."

A mobile phone allows 22-year-old student Rachel Thomas to log on when she's at school.

"Facebook is the first thing I do each day," said Thomas, who is studying for a master's degree at the Delhi School of Social Work and counts about 1,000 friends on the social- networking site. "I don't know anybody who's not on Facebook. My mom's on Facebook. My whole class is on Facebook."

Bollywood tweets

Twitter Inc is also gaining in India, helped by iconic users like Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, business tycoon Anand Mahindra and former minister Shashi Tharoor. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS), India's largest software exporter, posts its earnings in 140-character messages on the micro-blogging website.

LinkedIn Corp has 10 million members in India, its second- largest market after the US, according to the Mountain View, California-based company's website.

Facebook faces new competition from Google+, which started June 29. The service had 6.44 million visitors in the US through July 24 and 3.62 million in India, not including mobile usage, said Andrew Lipsman, ComScore Inc's vice president for industry analysis.

Google is testing a mobile application in the US and India that allows users to send status updates via SMS without an Internet connection. Most phone users in India don't have Internet browsing. Facebook has a similar service in India.

'Facebook button'

Research In Motion Ltd said its growth in emerging markets such as India and Indonesia has largely been driven by social networking applications like Facebook for BlackBerry 2.0. Rival Huawei Technologies Co sells phones with a "Facebook button."

"You press it once and all your social networks are integrated in one -- you don't have to log in everywhere," said Paul Scanlan, vice president of solution and marketing for the South Pacific region at Huawei. "If a phone doesn't have a Facebook button, you're not going to sell 10 million handsets."

A big draw for many Indians is the falling cost. Phones with Internet browsing capability sell for as little as $23. For Verma, who never learned to use a computer and saved for 10 months to buy her elder daughter's phone, that gives her children an opportunity she didn't have.

"What I don't know about -- Facebook, Internet -- they need to know about," she said. "It is worth the expense."

Nokia brings out 1GHz Symbian phone Nokia 500

Beleaguered cellphone maker Nokia has brought out its first Symbian-based smartphone running on 1GHz processor, Nokia 500. Nokia 500 is based on the current version of Symbian OS, Anna.

Measuring 111.3 x 53.8 x 14.1mm, the phone weighs 93 grams and comes with changeable back covers. Sporting a 3.2-inch capacitive touch display with a screen resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, Nokia 500 has a 5 megapixel camera.

The latest Symbian Anna OS mobile phone comes with a refreshed user interface (UI) and improved browser and split-screen messaging. The phone also has the latest version of Nokia Maps for free drive and walk navigation pre-installed.

The phone also packs a music player with FM and internet radio. There's a Social app that brings users all social media updates directly on the homescreen.

As for memory, the smartphone is equipped with 2GB memory expandable up to 32GB with micro-SD card. For connectivity, there is Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi b/g, 3.5 mm jack and microUSB port.

Nokia claims that the smartphone's battery offers 5-7 hours talktime, 450+ hours standby or up to 35 hours of music playback. Nokia 500 is expected to come at a price of 150 euros (Rs 9500 approx) and is scheduled to hit markets in the third quarter of this year.

Taking on HRD minister Kapil Sibal, Team Anna on Monday released the interim results of its 'referendum' in the minister's constituency of Chandni Chowk which showed 85% of respondents were against the government-proposed Lokpal Bill.

The civil society activists question whether Sibal still represented the "aspirations of his people" since the results contradicted whatever he had been saying in joint committee meetings held earlier to draft the anti-corruption Bill.

Anna and his supporters claimed they distributed four lakh forms in Sibal's constituency out of which 86,000 forms had been collected.

"After evaluating 72,000 forms, the trends that have come out are overwhelming. About 82% agree that the prime minister should be brought under the ambit of Lokpal, whereas only 6% were against this. At least 88% respondents felt MPs' conduct in Parliament should be investigated by an independent Lokpal," said Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal.

He said 86% of those polled wanted the judiciary to be brought under the purview of the Lokpal and 84% voted in favour of the Lokpal having the power to dismiss a corrupt official.

Kapil Sibal's team was quick to return the fire, alleging that the referendum was carried out by BJP-RSS workers. Sibal himself chose not to join issue and merely gave out a terse statement mocking the exercise.

"They are being modest. In fact, the result should have been 100% in favour of Jan Lokpal Bill. I am thankful for their generosity," Sibal said.

A new study says Indians are most depressed

Indians are among the world's most depressed. According to a World Health Organization-sponsored study, while around 9% of people in India reported having an extended period of depression within their lifetime, nearly 36% suffered from what is called Major Depressive Episode (MDE).

MDE is characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy and poor concentration, besides feeling depressed.

Lowest prevalence of MDE was in China(12%). The average age of depression in India is 31.9 years compared to 18.8 years in China, and 22.7 years in the US. The study, published in the BMC Medicine journal and based on interviews of more than 89,000 people in 18 different countries by 20 different researchers, says depression affects nearly 121 million people worldwide. It is the second contributor to shorter lifespan for individuals in the 15-44 age group. The percentage of respondents, who had lifetime MDE was higher in high-income (28.1%) than in low to middle-income (19.8%) countries. When it came to lifetime prevalence rates of depression, France (21%) and the US (19.2%) reported the highest rates of depression. Women are twice as likely to suffer depression as men and the loss of a partner, whether from death or divorce, was a main factor, the study reveals. WHO ranks depression as the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide and projects that by 2020, it will be the second leading cause.

Prof Bromet from State University of New York said, "This is the first study which compares depression and MDE across countries and cultures. Depression is a significant public-health concern across all regions of the world and is linked to social conditions."

Terror struck Mumbai again when three serial blasts in crowded areas killed 18 people and injured 113. The blasts took place in Dadar (West), Zaveri Bazar and Opera House.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Aroop Patnaik said it was a terror strike. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister P Chidambaram to extend all possible help to the families of the dead and the injured.

ATS registers three cases and starts probe in Mumbai blasts

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday registered three cases in connection with the serial bombings that left 18 people dead and 131 injured. "
ATS chief Rakesh Maria told reporters, ATS has taken over the probe and 12 joint teams of ATS and crime branch have been formed and we are being closely assisted by Central agencies. This case is being taken up on priority".

The maximum casualty in the last evening's terror attack was witnessed at Opera House where 10 people were killed. Seven persons died at the explosion at Zaveri Bazaar, the police officer said.

The third blast took place in Dadar. "Samples have been taken from the blast sites. Forensic experts are sifting through the debris for more evidence. It is too early to say anything regarding the kind of explosives used," he said, adding all angles will be probed.

The ATS chief requested people not to indulge in rumour mongering. "Even this morning there were rumours about six unexploded bombs being found in the city. We request people not to believe in such rumours and assist the administration in maintaining peace.

The BJP and Shiv Sena protests against Mumbai blasts

The BJP and Shiv Sena organised protests in the city on Thursday to denounce the serial bombings in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The BJP, under leadership of city unit chief Vikas Mathkari and MLA Girish Bapat, organised a silent protest at Savarkar memorial on Karve Road. "Since 1993 this is 14th terrorist attack in Mumbai. All citizens in the country are with the government to fight terrorism," Mathkari said. He also denounced Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's alleged statement on the Mumbai balsts.

The Shiv Sena organised a separate protest at Mandai. Sena leader Sham Deshpande said that the Pune people firmly support the Mumbaikars in their hour of crisis.

The BJP state unit chief Sudhir Mungantiwar said in a press statement that the government should firmly tackle the terrorism menace and that the entire country stands united to combat terrorism.

Opposition parties have organized protests in Western Maharashtra also.

The slower-than-expected growth in the country's factory output may send markets in a tizzy every now and then. But, management graduates passing out of premier B-schools are betting big on manufacturing. Volatility in the global financial markets is pushing fresh graduates to brick and mortar industries.

An increasing number of students passing out from the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are choosing careers in manufacturing over traditional finance roles post-slowdown. On an average, 10% more students across IIMs have taken up jobs in core sectors this year as compared to previous years. This is likely to go up further over the next three years, say experts.

Traditionally, MBAs prefer services sector with finance, marketing and consulting roles. The perception towards manufacturing industry is that of being too technical. But, with multinationals from the manufacturing space with projects in India opening doors to fresh MBAs, the game is changing. "There is an increased focus on infrastructure-related developments and acceleration in the manufacturing industry leading to an increase in demand for students from various specialisations," says Kanwal Kapil, chairman (placements), Management Development Institute.

No wonder, IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A) recently partnered with Samsung India Electronics to motivate students to look at the manufacturing industry for jobs. While IIM-A has several companies sponsoring students, Samsung will be the first manufacturing company to have a tie-up with the institute. IIM Lucknow (IIM-L) plans to invite more manufacturing firms in 2012 after seeing a good appetite for this sector during its final placements of 2011. "The improving economic situation is sure to create want for more managerial talent in the manufacturing sector," said a placement committee member at IIM-L.

And, IIM Kozhikode (IIM-K) sources live projects to give students an experience of the sector. Internet Scams and Frauds: Internet scammers want your money

Internet scammers generally want one thing: your money. To get it, they'll try to scare you into divulging account information, trick you into opening a harmful attachment, or dupe you into sending personal information. In short, scammers trade on the hope that you're gullible enough to fall victim to their deceptions, which are constantly changing.

Here's a rundown of some of the latest types of internet fraud schemes and advice on how to protect yourself.

Deactivation messages

From the 'scare you to act' department come email messages that threaten to deactivate your account if you do not click an embedded link to verify account details. Often, these messages claim that some kind of suspicious activity has occurred with your account, and the only way that you have to keep your account from being shut down is to click the embedded link immediately or within a certain amount of time.

Facebook users have recently been hit with such a scam. A message purporting to be from the 'Facebook Security Team' tells recipients that their accounts have been compromised and they have 12 hours to follow a link or they risk de-activation. Bottom line: Never click links in messages that claim that your account will be de-activated if you don't. If your account with a reputable organisation is ever actually compromised, the company will be smart enough to provide information about the situation in a way that does not require you to click any link, either to confirm any information or to re-activate your account.

Requested attachment messages

Email attachments, especially in messages from people you don't know, are common carriers of malware, spyware, or viruses. Scammers know that, by now, most people either do not open attachments sent by strangers or set up spam filters to remove such messages from their inbox automatically.

But senders of harmful attachments have become smarter, targeting users who may be expecting to receive attachments by email or who can be tricked into thinking they may have requested an email attachment. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation recently uncovered a scheme in which cyber criminals sent email attachments disguised as resumes to businesses who had posted jobs online. The attachments, once opened, unleashed malicious software that allowed the scammers to gain access to online banking credentials and ultimately to initiate wire transfers of money.

Bottom line: Always be suspicious of attachments, and be sure you use security software that scans email attachments before you open them.

'Facebook team' messages

It's no surprise that with over half a billion users, Facebook garners its own category of scam alert. Messages claiming to be from the ‘Facebook team’ are on the rise, and most of these prompt recipients to divulge account logon credentials.

One prevalent scam, for example, instructs recipients that Facebook is implementing a new login system that offers increased account security. To use the new system, the message says you must click a link to update your account. If you do, your login information will be stolen once you enter it.

Bottom line: Never 'update your account' via a link provided in a message. If you suspect that such a message is valid, visit your account by opening a web browser yourself and accessing it the usual way.

Prize collection messages

Who wouldn't like to wake up one day to find that they had won a prize, a sweepstakes, or some money that they weren't expecting? Fraudsters know that the answer is 'almost no one,' which is why email messages claiming that 'you won' continue to flow. The latest twist on this tactic, however, is for the email scammer to claim that in order to receive the prize or monetary award, you must first provide a host of information by email.

A '2011 Rugby World Cup Lotto Promotion' email message is just the latest example of this type of fraud. The message, which purports to be from the 'International Rugby Board (IRB),' claims that the recipient has won one million dollars by having one of the lucky email addresses drawn in a lottery that allegedly involved 'all the email addresses of people that are active online.'

Scammers know that people are suspicious of embedded links these days, however, so instead of having the recipients click a link, this scam asks the recipient to send a great deal of personal information to the email address of a 'claims administrator.' While no account information is solicited, enough personal information to facilitate identity theft is.

Bottom line: Never send personal information -- including name, address, age, and date of birth - to any stranger or supposed organisation by email.

IGNOU launched diploma courses in Chinese

The (IGNOU) has launched diploma and certificate programmes in Chinese language which will be offered in both face-to-face and online mode from this month.

"This is for the first time in India that the teaching of Chinese language and culture will be imparted through online demonstration via Ignou satellite," IGNOU said in a release.

"The online programmes are especially meant for those business schools in Delhi and outside Delhi which would like to introduce this programme to their B-School students," it said, adding that study materials, teaching and examinations under the scheme will be held through online mode.

The (DCLC) is a one year programme which can be completed in maximum two years duration with no entrance test. Admission to this programme is based on first cum first serve basis with maximum 30 seats for face-to-face mode.

A special feature of the diploma programme, according to Ignou, is that those scoring 80% and above marks in the final examination will be considered for undergoing further training in Chinese universities.

The last date for the submission of forms is July 18 2011.

Govt tells SC: 90% primary students opting for English

The state government on Thursday filed an affidavit before the high court of Bombay and Goa stating that over 90% of the students in government-aided primary schools have opted for English as the medium of instruction (MoI).

The government informed the court that according to the cabinet decision, the government will release grants to English medium primary schools and also those opting for Konkani and Marathi.

The government also stated that one subject in Konkani or Marathi will be compulsory from Std I to Std X.

A monitoring committee has also been set up to ensure that the schools follow the norms laid down while giving the grants and schools have to ensure that they have proper infrastructure in place for implementing the medium of instruction decision before the grants are released, the affidavit stated.

During the hearing, the petitioners lawyer, senior advocate Atmaram Nandkarni told the court that he would like to file a rejoinder to the reply filed by the government and prayed for time till Tuesday.

A division bench comprising Justice S A Bobde and Justice F M Reis then directed the petitioners to file reply to the affidavit on the next date of hearing, on July 12.

It may be recalled that the petitioners have pointed out that the circular issued by the directorate of education shows 'total non application of mind'.

While alleging that the Rules of Business as provided under Article 166 of the Constitution have been violated while issuing the circular, the petitioners said that the decision should have been implemented in a phased manner from the pre-primary level and not forced upon the students.

IIPM announces Anna Hazare Fellowship

The Supreme Court on Monday appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a former SC judge to probe black money issue. Former SC judges - Justice B P Jeevan Reddy and Justice M B Shah - will be the chairman and vice-chairman of the SIT. The team will also include chiefs of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). The SIT will file first status report in the third week of August.

The apex court slammed the government for its lethargy in getting the black money back. The court asked the government to disclose names of foreign bank holders against whom I-T proceedings have been concluded. It also told the government that it could not have agreed with other countries under double taxation avoidance treaty not to disclose names of foreign bank account holders who have deposited illicit money abroad.

The bench also questioned the Centre’s decision to grant a licence for retail banking to Swiss bank UBS whose credentials had come under scrutiny in black money cases.

The court issued a series of directions to the SIT and gave it just over a month’s time to file compliance reports.

Commenting on the development, home minister P Chidambaram said, “If the Supreme Court has given an order, it is final because it is the final court. Let us first read the order.”
The Supreme Court also severely criticized the government's delay in probing black money, Hasan Ali Khan and others and said this was not only against the constitutional mandate but also akin to putting national security in danger.

Welcoming the order, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, “This decision is a slap on the face of the government. The government does not want to take any tough and honest measures to check corruption and black money.”

Johnny Ryan is a Dublin-based expert in web technologies. Besides being an author, he is also a public speaker, having presented his views at forums like the United Nations, the OSCE, the European Commission, et al. A regular contributor to Fortune, Businessweek, Reuters, BBC and the Associated Press, he speaks to B&E on one of his latest favourite subjects – the Android OS.

B&E: Of late there has been some dissatisfaction shown by Google and Android developers over earnings from Android OS, despite the fact that consumers are activating 300,000 Android handsets each day. Do you see this “low” earnings from apps as a major reason for Google to make the very Android OS a “not free” platform – along the lines of the Apple iOS model?
Johnny Ryan (JR): No, and there are two reasons. First, I do not think that Google is like most other companies. I have a feeling that, especially now, under its new CEO, Larry Page, Google is driven at the top by “nerd norms”, a kind of engineers’ ethics. This may not apply across the company, on all decisions, but I think if the question were asked of the founders, “Do we want to close Android and make more money”, the answer would be – no! Second, while there may be tweaking at certain points to push mobile handset manufacturers to conform to minimum standards of devices, Google can not afford to exclude the low price market.

B&E: How about handset makers who have invested so much towards teh Android OS project. Will Google making Android a paid platform bring suffering onto these handset makers?
JR: Indeed. And that is another reason why Google will keep Android as it is.

B&E: There are also tablet makers – like Samsung, Sony & Dell – who rely on Android OS. Do you think Google’s intentions to increasingly monetise Android OS will hurt these players as well?
JR: No. Were Google to more aggressively pursue monetisation, it would be good news for Samsung, Sony & Dell because tablet manufacturers target the higher end of the market. These devices are the ones to compete with Apple et al, on an equal hardware footing, equipped with expensive hardware capable of accelerated games and other leisure activities. Users of these devices are far more likely to pay for apps and services than a new adopter of a low-cost smart phone.

B&E: Revenue from Android app store grew to $102 million in 2010. By comparison, the Apple App Store saw 131.9% growth y-o-y jumping to $1.7 billion. More surprisingly, the BlackBerry App World had revenues of $165 million, and the Nokia Ovi store saw revenue of $105 million – both larger than Android despite a much smaller selection of available apps. Will Google do something about this soon?
JR: There are two driving factors here: Google is, fundamentally, a search company. The more users of smart phones, even if they do not purchase apps or content via the Android Market, the better for Google. Android users in particular are likely to use Google search and GMail. However, this is not necessarily the case for App developers. The risk is that the Android Market is unable to support a sufficient number of app developers, and that the Android apps will be of low quality. I call this the “Android Paradox”. Google wants more people using Search, so it needs to keep the number of new smart phone adopters high, and must keep costs down. But at the same time, it is preferable that at least some of these new adopters pay for the apps that will keep the Android market attractive to App developers.

B&E: Not many have raised objections as to why Google does not make money by licensing out its OS. If it did at even $15 per device sold, it could possibly have made up to $1 billion in 2010 alone (67.23 million units of android devices sold around the world x $15/device) assuming people were willing to actually pay for it. Can Google try and correct its course in this regard?
JR: I do not think it would be easy. Neither would it be easy, nor would it prove desirable for Google.

B&E: The ‘Android paradox’ you mentioned. There must be a way that Google can capitalise on the fact that its app store can’t support high-quality apps?
JR: Were I be advising Google, I would counsel it to capitalise on the Android Paradox. Increase the spectrum between the highest and lowest specification of mobile handset. At the low end of the market, Google is capturing new arrivals to the smart phone by working with manufacturers who produce low and medium specification devices. It could even invade Apple’s space at the high end of the market by, working on handsets that offer the finest media/gaming experience at a very high price points. The high end of the market may be the secret to keeping the ecosystem attractive to developers, helping Google retain them.

Now, IIM aspirants don't have to wait to get a bachelor's degree before taking the entrance test; at least a few can hope to step into India's top management school right after school.

The Indian Institute of Management-Indore has launched a five-year integrated post-graduate programme in management — a three-year degree programme followed by masters. The first batch scheduled this year will have 120 students.

The five-year residential programme allows students to drop out after the degree course, designed to be a mix of essential skill subjects — maths and statistics, history, literature and political science, biological sciences, languages, finance and accounting, economics and information technology. Apart from classroom lectures, IIM-I has a component on international exposure and an internship at a social organization.

The minimum eligibility is 60% in Class XII, and final selection will be based on an aptitude test and interview. The details will be revealed in a few days. The tuition fee for the first three years will be Rs. 3 lakh per annum; for next two years, it will be Rs 5 lakh a year. "IIM Indore wants to have a dominating presence, both in terms of size and impact, in all segments of management education, including under-graduate programmes," said IIM-Indore director N Ravichandran. "We identified four streams — top-end research programmes, executive education programme, the flagship post-graduate programme and an integrated PGP where we'll have the time and opportunity to shape young minds towards management education."

Munich (Germany)-based Florian Müller is an award-winning IPR activist with 25 years of software industry expertise spanning across different market segments and a variety of technical & commercial areas. Müller was perhaps amongst the first IPR experts to accuse Google of copying code from Oracle for its Android OS. He shares his opinions on the subject with B&E.

B&E: Many questions have been raised over copyright issues related to Android OS. How big are these problems for Google and the handset makers?
Floriam Müller (FM): They are a big problem for Google, but a far bigger one for its device makers. Most of the time it is the device makers who get sued, not Google. There are a few cases in which Google itself is named as a defendant, most notably Oracle’s lawsuit over seven patents and various copyrights. But for the most part it’s the device makers’ problem. Indirectly, that turns it into a problem for Google because if the intellectual property situation doesn’t come under control, some device makers may drop Android. Recently there was a rumor that Motorola is developing a mobile operating system of its own. There was some speculation that Motorola – which is being sued by Apple, Microsoft and a significant number of other companies for patent infringement – could be very concerned over the intellectual problems surrounding Android as well as Google’s heavy-handed control over Android.

B&E: You mentioned that most of the time, it is the device makers who get the stick in court. Could you explain this?
FM: By my count, 42 Android-related patent infringement suits have already been filed, and only two of them (Oracle and Skyhook) target Google exclusively, while the others name device makers as defendants. Most of the time it is just device makers being dragged to court.

B&E: With the cloud of lawsuits, can Google turn Android into a cash cow?
FM: In Google’s case, the cost of resolving all of the intellectual property issues Google faces could exceed the actual revenue opportunity, possibly even by far.

B&E: If patent claims against Android build up at this rate, what is the amount we are looking for that Google might have to pay up on order of the courts?
FM: It is very hard to estimate litigation costs, but the real strategic issue for Google won’t be one-time costs such as for litigation. They will mostly be concerned about per-unit royalties that make Android-based devices more expensive, hence less competitive.

B&E: Will payouts in settling patent infringement cases show on Google’s net earnings from Android?
FM: Since Google itself is rarely sued, the impact on the net earnings of device makers will be greater than on Google’s earnings. The Oracle lawsuit could, however, require Google to pay something on the order of a billion dollars depending on the exact outcome. The extent to which Android is accused of infringement is unpredecented. 42 lawsuits in a little more than a year show that there are fundamental problems. There are definitely some Android-specific reasons, such as Google’s ‘loose management’ of intellectual property issues, that contribute greatly to this mess.

B&E: Some have even pointed to security issues related to the Android OS. Is that something which handset makers and buyers should be wary of?
FM: By emphasising that the software is “free”, Google positioned Android as the poor man’s iPhone. But the security issues come with it. The Android Market is not managed well by Google. It contains programs infected by malware. I use a Samsung Galaxy, a high-end Android phone, and I like it for the most part, but I don’t have confidence in Google’s app store and never buy anything there.

B&E: Android Market Place is not giving Google enough topline push. Are the earnings enough to sustain stable Android OS projects in future?
FM: App stores can but only be a small part of a revenue mix. In Google’s case, there’s not enough money to be made there to sustain development of an OS.

B&E: Finally, will the Andoird connection enable handset and tablet makers like HTC, Samsung, LG, Dell, Acer et al, to make money in times to come?
FM: There are about three dozen device makers who have adopted Android by now and it’s clear to me that when growth rates flatten, most of them won’t make money with Android-based devices anymore. For now the explosive growth of the smartphone market creates some short-term opportunities, but strategically those device makers are in a difficult position because Google controls the platform. Google bullies Android device makers and forces them to do what it wants. Right now the biggest problem for makers of Android-based tablet makers is a lack of demand. Android tablets are a failure so far. They also turn out to be too expensive.

An expert from the IT-obsessed state of California, Santa Barbara-based Andrew Seybold, who has served on the Motorola Research Board, IBM’s Mobile Computing Advisory Board and is a consultant to companies like RIM, HP, AT&T, Verizon, Nokia, Motorola & Qualcomm, speaks to B&E about pricing issues, and other growing concerns for Google’s Android OS.

B&E: According to UK-based research firm IHS, the Android Market saw revenue grow by 861.5% y-o-y from 2009 to 2010, but the actual dollar figures are small compared to all the other major app stores. What do you think will Google do in near future to increase revenues from apps?
Andrew Seybold (AS): The Android Market place is about those who believe that everything on the Internet should be free, free O/S, free apps. And they are not those who spend money, or desire valued content in the long-run. Therefore the Android community is going to have a tough time figuring out how to monetise apps for the devices.

B&E: Historically, apps have never really been money making machines. Will it be different with Android OS?
AS: Google itself set the stage as a free and open environment. And today, it is trying to capitalise on it. They set the bar for usage of everything free. Apple makes its money on hardware, not much on apps. The developers make more money on apps than Apple does by a long shot, going back to BREW – the first of these types of stores. Qualcomm did not make real money on apps. Its motive was to have the networks sell more devices, which in turn, sold more chipsets. Apps will never be a big money making proposition for those who run the stores. They are only used to drive other forms of business like in BREW, Apple, and even RIM. Since Google has no other portion of the ecosystem in which to make revenue, they are at a real disadvantage over the others who use the apps to drive other profit centres of their business.

B&E: Paid apps have lagged on Android for a number of reasons. One of them has been inadequate billing options. But Google has worked on this front, Do you see this as a move from Google to monetise its Android OS?
AS: It wasn’t until last month that Google added the ability for consumers to pay for Android apps through its AT&T plan. Android is about consumer devices and usage. Google hasn’t made it easy to purchase apps and even adding more ways to purchase apps is not going to make Android a money-making operation.

B&E: In case, one day, Android no longer remains OPEN & FREE, how will the handset makers react?
AS: If Android changes its business model, the handset vendors will lose interest in it.

B&E: Fragmentation of the OS – is that an issue for app-devlopers?
AS: Handset makers are constantly making changes to Android, which, in turn becomes a headache for developers. Apple is the leader – one OS controlled by them, across multiple platforms, easy to build apps for. Android developers have to understand the various differences of the OS supported by the different handset vendors and build applications for multiple flavours of the OS.

B&E: Because of its open nature, Google does not make money from licensing the OS, the way that Microsoft does. Do you see Google taking a chance with licensing its OS soon?
AS: That would kill Android. The business model that Google has set in motion is no business model. And the next thing that could kill Android is the fact that since it is open it is ripe for hackers to go after, Android will be their favourite platform. Setting a price which is too high on a product can be corrected by lowering the price. Setting a price for an OS first at zero, and then trying to monetise it later, is not a proven business model and is subject to failure. Google has trapped itself in the Android world.

Android OS, which has helped many handset and tablet makers live to see the present (like HTC, Motorola and Dell), has earned global fame (read 67.23 million handsets sold in 2010, as per Gartner, accounting for a 22.7% market share). In the process, the OS platform has become powerful. As Gartner estimates, the platform will become the #1 mobile OS by the time this very year ends, with a 38.7% market share. Volumes, yes. But it is turning out to be a “much fame, no gain” recital for Google. Trouble is, Google has little to earn from Android – its “free” and open-source form proving to be a failed Parthian shot for the Mountain View giant. Over $1.5 billion has been burnt in the labs to develop the OS (with millions more being added to developmental costs every year), and the net earnings, six years post-acquisition of the OS maker, don’t seem to be justifying the dollars and the half-a-decade of lab work. Some even argue that Google’s mobile advertising revenue which stood at $1 billion annually (as per an October 2010 report by CNN), makes the Android a cash-cow already. Wrong. During the past 2 years, the Android platform has been able to generate just $243 million for Google. Out of this, only $130 million have been made as Internet ad-revenues (the company’s breadwinner which accounted for 97% of its topline in 2010). In short, Google’s Android OS, despite being the OS platform present on one of every four handsets sold in the world during the past year, accounted for only 6.5% of the total ad-revenues that Google earned through mobility devices. Translation – 93.5% of the earnings from mobile Internet ad-clicks for Google came from non-Android phones. This is a big cause of concern.

It was an obituary which tagged Alfred Nobel a “Merchant of death” that persuaded him to work for peace. Google at the moment, is in need of such a mind-changing note, which can force it to relinquish its suicidal Android pricing & sales strategy. So, with no cynicism about the obsession with which the company has forked out billions to make Android a success amongst handset & tablet-makers who love what is “free”, question is – will we see a price tag on the platform soon? Many doubt it. Problem is, if it does not happen soon, the overwhelming fired-up start story will only lead to a thin (and insufficient) stream to support investments to nurture Google’s mobile dreams.

That Google is turning on the heat comes as a relief. In the past couple of months, it has communicated to major carriers and handset makers that it will not allow any more tweaking of the Android platform without permission. This will help put an end to all forms of fragmentation on the Android platform. It will also solve the problem of many apps on the Android Market Place not being compatible on all Android devices. Though this comes as a shocker to many who were initially both happy and impressed by Google’s benevolence to allow royalty-free usage and fragmentation of the platform, this may just be a warning flare that Google is over and done with the idea of saving others (read HTC, Motorola, Acer and others) billions in R&D costs (that the others would have had to otherwise spend to create their own OS) and be happy with the dimes themselves. Till date, every time Google plans a release of a version of Android (six such versions have been released so far), it shares the initial secret platform with only a particular handset maker and chipmaker first, who then tweak the platform accordingly (Google chose HTC & Qaulcomm for its inaugural Cupcake version, and Nvidia & Motorola for its latest Honeycomb format). This makes it impossible for any handset maker to prepare a platform where all the apps prepare by developers for Android can work hassle-free. This way, it has been estimated that of the 294,738 apps that are available in the market place (as on May 1, 2011), at best 30% can be run hassle-free in all Android handsets. In other words, its very Open Source nature which led to the initial Android wildfire may prove too damaging for its sustained growth due to fragmentation, perhaps even crushing Google’s hopes to make it big in the mobile OS category after the hardware fiasco called Nexus One phone.

Issue is: if you are giving “exclusive rights” to handset makers, why do social service for all the bells and whistles that third party handsets can flaunt? A minimum royalty will not disturb the price elasticity. You make HTC a brand again, and you charge nothing for the very product it is selling. You give Motorola and Acer shots at mobiles & tablets, and you do so ex-gratia. We ask – what moral obligation got Google to give-in to the temptation? Shareholders surely deserve a greater show of capitalism.

Perhaps – and it remains a big question – Google is waiting for the day when the count of Android handsets sold crosses the threshold mark. This could be as early as the first quarter of 2013 (Gartner estimates that more than 310 million Android handsets - 310.09 million - will be sold in 2012, accounting for 49.2% of the mobile OS market). So, where does the company begin? As Rajan Anandan, MD and VP for Sales & Operations, Google India, tells B&E, “We have plans to separate the OS and differentiate Android for tablets and smartphones.” So the plan is set – first create a differentiated Android for the two product categories. Then perhaps try and charge licensing royalty on at least one of them. If Google takes the lower risk path, it will be the tablet wars which will get hotter soon. But it’s easier said than done. Experts doubt whether the world of handset and tablet makers will accept a marriage with a dowry clause. It will be an awkward stage to perform on. Truth is – Google’s very business model defies economics. A price which is too high can be corrected by lowering it. Setting a price for an OS at zero, and then trying to monetise it later, is not a proven business model and is subject to failure. Indeed. And that is another reason why Google may keep Android as it is. There is a historical analogy here. In the early 1990s this is what killed Gopher, an early competitor to the “www”. When the University of Minnesota (that owned Gopher) announced that would charge for its server software, commercial Gopher developers abandoned the service because they did not want to risk working on a platform for which they might some day be subject to fees. Google’s case is not different.

The Android story is a cloud with no silver lining. The case with Google is no different. Even the new OS the company is planning for netbooks, christened the Chrome OS (which again, will be “free”; the first launch of such a netbook will be from Acer later this year), is bound to be a repeat of the Android mistake. Only this time, it may not even find buyers. In our interaction with J. T. Wang, Chairman and CEO of Acer, he tried to challenge our predictions, as he mentioned how Acer is already in a leading position in this open platform tablet market and how these tablets have received numerous praises from the retail channels and telecom operators. But New York-based Sascha Segan, Managing Editor (Mobility) at The PC Magazine, dismisses Wang’s optimism in a flat tone. “Chrome OS is a dead end. It mostly exists because Google wants an OS play on Intel-based laptops, but nobody really knows what to do with it. Chrome OS is a stub. No consumer wants a crippled laptop that requires network access for most functions; that’s been tried and has failed many times,” says Segan to B&E. Forget about success, even mistakes can be replicated. For Google, the margin of error gets bigger and it comes in the form of the Chrome OS – free and far from being a best-selling OS.

Where Google is also going wrong is the app market. All OS and app developers rely on the earnings from the sale of both the OS and their apps. Google at present is earning from only the apps on the Android platform (which as stated earlier, has its own share of problems due to fragmentation). But, for Google, expecting the Android app market to give a fat paycheque is taking a walk to the bank in its dreams. Why? Even when it comes to apps, Android runs a discount show. Says New York-based Fred Krom, Analyst at Goldman Sachs to B&E, “Google collects a 30% share from Android market app purchases, which we believe ends up being low margin, and we estimate at least a 40% share from mobile in-app advertising via AdMob.” The end result is, the current earning from the app market is not enough to even please its developers. Google may carry on with the app project with its massive bank of free cash holding ($34.98 billion as of end-2010), but trouble is – for the developers, sustainability is being questioned. As of date, the annual Android developer income stands at just 6% of Apple iOS developer income, with an annual growth rate which is just 9% higher as compared to iOS’. In other words, the gap between the two is getting larger every year, and this is not good news for Andy’s brainchild. If Google has to record a topline of anywhere in excess of $60 billion (Apple made $65.23 billion in FY2010, while Microsoft earned $62.48 billion – and both rely minimally on their app worlds), it has to think beyond apps. To put this in numbers, let us consider the king of apps – Apple. Sales through Apple’s App Store reached $1.78 billion in 2010. Huge? Actually, this represents just 2.73% of its revenues during the year. Google on the other hand made just $102 million from its Android Market Place (as per a February 2011 report by UK-based research firm IHS) – that makes for 0.35% of its FY2010 revenues. There is another problem with mobile apps – that of “free” being best. [When was the last time you actually purchased an app? And even if you did, how many in your peer group have been regular at downloading “paid” apps? Your answer is our concern.]

As of end-2010, there were 74.67 million Android users in the world. Going by how much Google made from apps last year, the average revenue per user (ARPU) translates to $1.37. Even if the ARPU was to grow to the $2 mark over the next two years (which is doubtful, until Google clears the mess created by compatibility issues, that is ailing its world of its apps on all versions of the OS), by end-2012, Google would on the highest side earn $1.13 billion from sales of apps by end-2012 (estimates of 564.63 million Android handsets sold by 2012 as per Gartner; calculation assumes all users to be active). This would still account for just 2.53% of Google’s total revenues for that year (estimated to be $44.24 billion as per Credit Suisse). On the other hand, had Google charged a minimal $15 from licensing of its OS on each handset from day one, (much below the industry standard of $30, and a viable option for handset makers), we would have been sitting on projections of the collections through licence fees, crossing $8.47 billion by 2012, and $29.31 billion by 2015. On the other hand, sales of apps at $2 ARPU would still fall short of the $4 billion mark by 2015. The problem is that if Android developers can’t make money, they will leave, users will leave, and Google will lose. So, low earnings from apps is a concern because Google wants developers to find Android an attractive platform. $29.31 billion by 2015 on one hand, less than $4 billion on the other – what is Google thinking?

Patent infringement allegations and litigation costs are also not giving Android and its social patron Google peaceful dreams. 42 lawsuits in a little more than a year show that there are fundamental problems. Forget Oracle, Microsoft, Apple and the big names of Silicon Valley, even the likes of a company like Bedrock Computer Technologies (an outfit which is inactive as a company at present) took Google to court for patent infringement on a particular technology used in Android’s Linux kernel. As a ruling, Google has been ordered to pay $5 million for IPR violation. Dirtying hands is one thing – forcing others to become a victim, is another. The worst part about Google being dragged to court for all of Android OS’ wrongdoings is that other handset and tablet makers face the music too. In March 2010, HTC was dragged to court by Apple which claimed that the Taiwanese manufacturer had infringed on 20 of its patents related to the user interface, the inner and outer architecture of its Android powered handsets. In November 2010, it was Microsoft’s turn to get famous, when it accused handset-maker Motorola in a US district Court in Washington, that its Android handsets (Droid 2 and Charm) had infringed on 9 of its patents related to syncing emails, contact list, calendar et al. Even tablet makers are not spared in this game of civil suits. In March this year, Microsoft filed another case in the Washington court and in the International Trade Commission against Android OS tablet and e-reader seller Barnes and Nobel (and its device suppliers Foxconn and Inventec) for infringing on its patents. Such cases where Google makes other manufacturers liable is a serious cause of concern if Android (and even the Chrome OS) is to find more manufacturers joining hands. As of date, of the 42 Android-related patent infringement suits, only two of them (Oracle and Skyhook) target Google exclusively. The others name device makers among the defendants – strangely, most of the time, just device makers. While speaking to B&E from Munich, Founder of Foss Patents & an Intellectual Property expert, says, “Google bullies Android device makers and forces them to do what it wants. Copyright issues are a big problem for Google, but a far bigger one for device makers. Indirectly that turns it into a problem for Google because if the IPR situation doesn’t come under control, some device makers may drop Android. Recently there was a rumor that Motorola is developing a mobile OS of its own and that Motorola, which is being sued by Apple, Microsoft and a number of others on its Android OS handsets, could be very concerned over the IPR problems surrounding Android as well as Google’s heavy-handed control over Android.” In terms of litigation costs, since Google itself is rarely sued, the impact on the earnings of device makers will be greater. That however does not mean that for Google, litigation costs will be an easy rock to swallow. [For instance, the Oracle lawsuit could require Google to pay at least $1 billion – 311.5% more than what Android has earned till date!]

But, all is not lost. Not yet. There are some silver linings on the horizon. Perhaps Google is thinking of laying out a strategy to work its way out of the well once 2013 sets in, and mobile Internet (and mobile advertising) has taken off completely, as Manhattan-based Spencer Wang, Analyst at Credit Suisse tells B&E, “Google is in the process of building a comprehensive mobile presence, which would place it (along with Apple) at the centre of the mobile Internet ecosystem. Mobile Internet is an incremental opportunity for Google, as opposed to a risk.”

The company also has to rework some of its old Android OS strategies, while laying the ground for some fresh ones. One of which, is to use Android and become a virtual telco. The other one, of course – which the company is famously secretive about at the moment – is to work on monetising its Android platform. Google is an 800-pound gorilla, and Android so far has gone strong in volumes. It’s the cash box which worries the new CEO Larry Page, with litigation & fragmentation issues only adding to his headache. But Page has to realise that as long as Android is Open Source, matters will not improve. The solution to get rid of this double trouble disaster (of increasing investments and unimpressive payoffs) is to repudiate the dual-doctrine of delighting consumers and loving volumes. Playtime is over in Google-land and ‘nerd’ will not do – it has to be an ‘shareholder-pleasing CEO’ taking charge. And Page has to act fast. Question is – which four-letter word will he finally settle for?

Highest Radiation Mobile phones launched

Over the last few years, several studies have found cellphones to increase the risk of brain cancer and dementia. However, most of such studies have remained largely inconclusive. Now to add fuel to the raging fire comes a World Health Organisation's study. According to WHO’s cancer experts, mobile phone users may be at increased risk from brain cancer and should use texting and free-hands devices to reduce exposure.

In India too, recently a government panel findings highlighted the health hazards of excessive mobile phone usage. The inter-ministerial committee named loss of memory, lack of concentration, digestive and sleep disturbances as some of the ill-effects caused by mobile phone radiation.

But, ever wondered which smartphones have higher radiation than others? CNET published a list of phones with high levels of RF radiation. The list includes some of the popular smartphone models from companies like LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

The study is based on SAR or Specific Absorption Rate. SAR is a way to measure the amount of radio frequency (RF) energy absorbed by the body when using the handset.

Here are top 15 from the list.

Motorola Bravo

This Android-based phone tops the list of phones with highest level of radiation. Sporting a 3.7-inch WVGA display, Motorola Bravo has a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, 512 MB RAM, aGPS, accelerometer and Bluetooth.

The phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.59

Motorola Droid 2 Global
No. 2 on the list is Android-powered Motorola Droid 2 Global which comes with QWERTY Keyboard. The phone has a TI OMAP 3630 1.2 GHz processor, 3D graphics accelerator, 5 megapixel auto focus Camera, 3.7-inches capacitive touchscreen display, 8GB internal storage and expandable memory upto 32GB.

The phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.58.

Sony Ericsson Satio
Sony Ericsson's 12 megapixel shooter Satio too figures among the phone's with highest level of radiation. The phone feature 256MB RAM, 3.5-inch touchscreen display, aGPS, Bluetooth with A2DP and USB 2.0.

The phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.56.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro

One of Sony Ericsson's flagship launch last year, Xperia X10 Mini Pro, is at No. 4 on the list. Sporting a petite 2.6-inch touchscreen display, the phone has a QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash and aGPS.

The Android-based phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.55.

Kyocera Jax S1300

Next on the list is Kyocera Jax S1300 with a 1.8-inch display. The phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.55

Motorola i335

The thin bar-style Motorola i335 sports a 1.5-inch display. The phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.53.

Motorola i335 doesn't come with camera, 3G support and music player.

Motorola Defy
The Android-based 3G smartphone Defy too figures among the phones with high level of radiation. The 3G-enabled phone is equipped with 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, and expandable memory up to 32GB.

The candybar phone offers support for aGPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 and 3.5mm headphone connector.

The phone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.52.

Motorola Grasp
Next one too is from the Motorola's camp. The candybar Motorola Grasp features a 2.2-inch display, 1.3 megapixel camera with digital zoom, QWERTY keyboard and stereo Bluetooth. The phone has basic multimedia features.

Grasp's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.52.

ZTE Salute

Featuring a 2.4-inch display, ZTE Salute's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is 1.52. The phone offers messaging options (text, picture and voice messaging), mobile Email, Instant Messaging, microUSB 2.0 and Bluetooth.

LG Rumor 2

At No. 10 is LG Rumor 2 with 1.51 Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The phone has side-sliding QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, micro USB and 2.5mm headphone connector.

Sanyo Vero
Sanyo's flip phone Vero also has a high radiating with a SAR count of 1.49.

The mobile phone comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA main display and a secondary monochrome display. It also sports a 1.3-megapixel camera with digital zoom lens and video recording capabilities.

Other key features of the clamshell includes Web browsing with Google search, Bluetooth connectivity, SMS threaded text messaging, speakerphone, multiple language support.

Motorola Droid 2
Another Motorola Droids on the list, Motorola Droid 2 has a SAR of 1.49. According to the survey, the Droid X just avoided making the list with a 1.43 SAR rating.

Motorola Droid is just another high-end Android smartphone with 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, 3.7 inch display, 16GB inbuilt memory, WiFi, GPS, slidout QWERTY keypad, speech recognition, Google applications and high speed data connectivity.

Motorola Droid

The older Droid is tied with the newer Droid 2 with a SAR count of 1.49.

Motorola refreshed its original Droid phone with Droid 2, a device with a better keyboard, Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and a faster 1-GHz processor.

HTC Desire

Android-based HTC Desire too has high radiation. The smartphone has a SAR of 1.48.

On specs front, HTC Desire Desire weighs around 135 grams, has a 3.7-inch display, 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, HTC Sense and 5 megapixel camera.

LG Chocolate Touch

LG Chocolate Touch is the second LG phone on the list. The LG smartphone has a SAR of 1.47.

The smartphone's specsheet includes touchscreen, VZ navigator and 3.2 megapixel camera. The smartphone enables users to access social networking sites and add pictures and photos. LG Chocolate Touch also sports of Dolby sound.

1 pm on a week day. For an office-goer aged 25-plus, one would presume it would be lunch time. Perhaps, time to connect with other colleagues or catch up with friends and associates over a meal.

Here's the revelation. The time between 1 pm and 2 pm has emerged as the 'peak hour' in terms of reach of the internet medium. It turns out, when a regular office-goer takes a break for lunch, he actually starts surfing the internet for areas of interest, whether it is emails, portals, banking or shopping.

According to IMRB International's all-India Web Audience Measurement (WAM) data for the month of March, on a base of 43.4 million users, peak hours on the internet vary for people aged 15-24 years and for those who are 25 years and above. In the 25-plus age bracket, the peak hour is between 1 pm and 2 pm with around 19 million users hooked to the net out of the total 25.4 million. This is followed by a declining trend throughout the day until mid-night.

For a youngster aged 15-24 years, the trend would be slightly different. The peak hour shows a stable trend throughout the day between 12 pm and 10-11 pm with 13.6 million users tuned in out of a total of 18 million.

Cut to a weekend, and the peak hour definition gets a little tweaked. The traffic is at its highest at around 12.30 pm for users aged 25 years and above, with about 15 million users. While for a person aged 15-24 years, the peak rush is seen more or less at the same time as his 25-plus counterpart, but there's a stable trend throughout the day with 10.7 million users.

"Internet usage starts reaching a peak from 10-11 am. For the older age groups, the usage peaks again from 1-2 pm. Internet usage in a way compliments the other media vehicles radio and television. So when radio usage starts dropping after the morning drive time, Internet usage picks up and is fairly consistent till evening 6-7 pm time band after which TV picks up," said Balendu Shrivastava, group business director, IMRB International.

It was only in November last year that IMRB International launched WAM to start measuring web rating points, similar to television rating points (TRPs) are used to measure television viewership.

According to IMRB's WAM data, E mail, search and social networking are the top three categories online. Peak hours in terms of usage would be different for each of these.

Marketers want robust measurement tool Unraveling of the peak hour for internet can assist marketers in making informed decisions on advertising. Web measurements would be useful for marketers to identify the right internet portals to use for a pre-defined target audience for a brand.
"These measurements have made what used to be gut-feel spends earlier to a more scientific approach," said Tanya Dubash, executive director & president marketing, Godrej Industries.

According to Dubash, however, the objective of using internet for most advertisers is to build engagement with the brand and not exposure to an advertisement. "Rather than defining our internet spends by peak traffic hours on the internet, we would rather drive our internet spends to placing our ad in the right environment/context that will enable an interaction for the brand with the internet user. So I would always go for an engagement /advocacy model on our internet spends rather than an exposure model based on peak traffic," said Dubash.

Notionally, the concept of peak-hour and non-peak hour already exists among marketers. Dabur India's marketing head (skin care), Sanjay Singal, said, "Even today some companies look at sending out promotion e-mailers on Fridays since they stand a better chance of grabbing greater and quality consumer eyeballs over the weekend when a person surfs the net at leisure. In fact, even with our Dabur Uveda online sales portal, we have witnessed a marked surge in visitor traffic, led mostly by working women."

Considering that internet is mainly dominated by males, young adults and city-users, Dubash said the group's endeavour is to advertise select brands relevant to this audience on the internet. "However given the growing number of mobile users who are accessing the internet, I am estimating the mobile internet to explode across audiences and make internet a viable medium to use for all our brands across all target audiences and that day to me is not too far away in India " said Dubash.

There is a growing interest among advertisers to demystify the internet medium in terms of user profiles. This has prompted market research firms to move in this direction. While IMRB has launched WAM, The Nielson Company , on the other hand, is working on an audience measuring metrics based on the convergence platform. Marketers, however, believe that the robustness of the measurement system is more important so as to instill faith in an advertiser to put his money behind the medium.

At present, ad spends are directed mainly towards the dominant media like television. Online forms merely 2 per cent of the total advertising pie.

Price Hike Among Commodities Makes India's Growth Story Suffer

The country's economy grew by 7.8% in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, the latest government figures showed. For the financial year to March, the economy grew by 8.5%, lower than the government's forecast of 8.6%.

India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but has been hit hard by rising consumer prices. Analysts say a surge in prices of essential commodities, coupled with measures to cool the economy, has started to take a toll on growth. The central bank has increased interest rates nine times in 15 months. The last rise on 3 May boosted the benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 7.25%

Losing momentum

India's economy has posted robust growth since the global financial crisis. However, the Reserve Bank of India's monetary tightening policies have seen a loss of momentum. Analysts say that as the central bank continues its fight against rising prices, the pace of growth is likely to be slow for some time.

However, analysts warned that though a slowdown in growth had been broadly expected, continued loss of momentum would have an adverse effect on the economy. "It is significant because it is the first quarter of sub-8% growth since the crisis," said Sonal Verma of Nomura. "The last four quarters we have been growing above 8%, so this is really a slow starting point for the next financial year," she added.

The Indian government had set an economic growth target of 9% for this fiscal year. However, in May Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee admitted that India could miss that goal because of high inflation and rising commodity prices. "When you look at India, it is perhaps going through a slight soft patch," said Mr Wood.

"Most countries would be delighted with the growth numbers India is recording, but it's lower than government growth targets." Mr Wood added that while India's had grown robustly compared to developed economies, compared with China, it was lagging behind. China's economy expanded 9.7% in the first three months of this year compared with the same period the year before. "They would love to emulate China's growth, but we don't think they are there yet," said Mr Wood.

Around Lucknow, his face is as difficult to miss as tales about his alleged waywardness. But now, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the tenth and last nawab of erstwhile Oudh is getting an image makeover, courtesy Facebook.

Besides having a dedicated page, the Nawab also has a Facebook group with 66 members. His introduction in the latter reads: “Contrary to popular notions, Wajid Ali Shah was a man of the highest moral character. He did never (sic) taste alcohol, nor indulge in any other sinful activity. He is not known to have missed a single day's prayer.” The Nawab is lauded for having taken on female servants as wives, only for purposes of offering them financial security while abstaining from any intimate relations with them. It also points out that critics who count his wives would do well to also look at the 1,700 men of letters and 500 physicians and scientists employed by the Nawab. His dedication to art and culture and his role in the revival of kathak is also highlighted.

Further down, the page draws comparisons with men of note elsewhere, with similar images, but to whom history has been kinder. The list includes Ataturk Mustapha Kemal, the father of modern Turkey and British Prime Minister Lloyd George.

Tales of the Nawab’s fondness for wine and women have long drawn derision. But as argued by Kaukab Qadr Sajjad Ali Mirza (great grandson of the Nawab) in Iqleem: Sakun Kai Tajdar such stories were circulated by the British to justify the annexation of Oudh, for had the Nawab’s debauchery and consequent indifference to administrative affairs been the reason behind the takeover, a better solution could have been found by replacing the ruler.

Meerza Zaigham Uddin Haider, retired principal of Lucknow's Shia Degree College holds forth that the Nawabs, for all their human failings, were, “benevolent and munificent”.

Another Nawab in desperate need of an image correction, Nasir-ud-din Haidar (the second nawab of the province) has also found refuge in a Facebook page which lauds him for his strong belief in Astrology and Astronomy and for setting up an observatory “bedecked with exceptionally good astronomical instruments".

British observations on Nawab Nasir-ud-din Haidar have been routinely ugly with Governor General of British India from 1793 to 1798, John Shore describing him as “a profligate and a sod devoid of sense who thinks of nothing but his own licentious pleasures”. Similarly Sir Henry Lawrence, British chief Commissioner to the Oudh wrote of the Nawab being “. …Engaged in every species of debauchery and surrounded by wretches ... of the lowest description, his whole reign was one continued satire…”

Centuries after such loathing, Facebook might just offer the chance for a reasoned and balanced take on the Nawabs.

TSI: The new set of rules notified by the government have had mixed reactions. What is the government's rationale behind bringing these new set of regulations?

Sachin Pilot (SP): The new rules notified by the Department of Information Technology in April, 2011, are absolutely in line with the global best practices and set standards worldwide. The idea is to ensure a clean, safe and secure cyberspace for individuals, organisations and financial and business transactions. Moreover, this move by the government is not something new to the world. It already exists in most countries and we have just replicated these global best practices and introduced them in India. What we have tried to do is put a standard structure in place which will prevent the rising cases of cyber crime, fake identities, phishing, financial frauds etcetra.

TSI: There have also been discussions on how the new rules could hamper the right to freedom of speech and expression and critics, including bloggers, have gone loud on this issue. How do you respond to these apprehensions?

SP: I am saying this once again. The idea here is to ensure a safe and secure cyberspace for Internet users in our country and they are in line with the accepted norms worldwide. As for the allegations on the rules curbing freedom of expression, I don't think they hold any merit. The right to freedom of speech and expression is recognised as a human right under India's Constitution and we are nobody to challenge it. We are actually the custodians of what has been put down in the Constitution. So, contrary to the views that have surfaced in the media and over the Internet, there is absolutely no attempt or intention to curtail the freedom of speech or impose any sort of a gag on anybody.

TSI: With the new rules in place, certain critics have said that the new rules will provide the Government of India an opportunity to exercise control on all content over the Internet. May not be true, but really, is this an aspect that the government is interested in?

SP: Let me make something very clear. The government has absolutely no role to play here and hence there is no question of us [the government] controlling content in any manner. The onus here will actually rest on the users and the intermediaries. The new rules require hosts or owners of websites to take action against objectionable content that is considered disparaging, harassing, blasphemous or hateful. It has to be understood that people have used the Internet to indulge in character assassination and financial frauds. The new rules are an attempt to put an end to such malpractices which are thriving on the misuse of the Internet.

TSI: In the event of a complaint, regarding an intermediary, say Google, how would you bring them to task? Do you think the companies will abide by the new rules set?

SP: India is an open society and it also has one of the world's best systems of jurisprudence. If anybody thinks he has been wronged, he has all the right to take legal recourse. The laws of the nation apply to everyone, irrespective of their might and status. Moreover, a fair open house discussion was held by the IT department will all stakeholders before framing the rules. Critics' concerns over personal information being leaked out are also unfounded. There is no need for any apprehensions or fears over the new set of rules.

TSI: In the given context, how is the new set of regulations going to translate for the industry?

SP: We believe in free Internet. We have a high Internet penetration of 8% to 9% and with broadband internet catching up fast, the numbers are only going to shoot higher. With such a promising scenario, there is an urgent need to apply global best practices in terms of Internet usage while keeping our priorities right. Anything that threatens the unity, integrity, defence or safety of our country cannot be allowed to flourish. The new rules are a right step in the right direction and these rules will help in the growth of the Internet industry in India.

There is no shortcut to success — the only way is through continuous effort’ they used to say in the old days. It is something that celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor largely agrees with, having learnt from his own experience of hosting a cookery show on television for the last 17 years.

“If you want to succeed, the only way is to put in an equivalent amount of continuous effort,” says Kapoor. “You have to put in the requisite labour each time in order to achieve success and cannot afford to rest on the laurels of your last success.

One has to keep trying hard, at times fall, get up and try again. This is one of the key secrets to success.I believe that passion is of no use unless it’s backed by sustained sincerity.”

TV actor Sweta Keswani, who while believing in the usefulness of luck in success, also believes that one has to back it up with effort. Effort is an indispensible pre-requisite for success. Don’t expect luck to find you, you have to go out and seek it.”

And as Sanjeev Kapoor says, success when achieved is the biggest motivator. “Once you achieve it, you’re motivated to go out and make even more efforts.”

There is jubilation in the air in the US as well as other western countries over the killing of Osama bin Laden. In all likelihood President Barack Obama will win the elections in the next term despite the worst recession the US is facing for the last several years.

But in Pakistan, enlightened and progressive forces, despite heaving a sigh of relief over his death, now apprehend the worst type of backlash once NATO forces in Afghanistan start leaving – and like the Afghan War which ended in the humiliation and ouster of the Soviet Union – Pakistan and Afghanistan in particular will bear the brunt of suicide bombing, a fresh injection of the arms and drugs culture and enhanced terrorism. Needless to say, narco-money will also play a more dominant role.

Osama Bin Laden was killed by US Special Forces which intruded into Pakistan territory, without taking the Pakistani government into confidence, indicating its mistrust of the Gilani-Zardari duo.

The distrust is also understandable because since long, remnants of military dictator General Zia-ul-Haq in Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) have been playing a double game.

The influence of fundamentalist forces in the ISI can be gauged from the fact that apparently they are not even willing to listen to the Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI chief General Ahmed Shuja Pasha. Both, according to wellknown south Asian security specialist Stephen Cohen, are secular, professional and the best generals in the Pakistan army.

Unlike the meek and thoroughly corrupt civilian governments, they are also tough negotiators and have the gall to terminate the supply lines of NATO forces from time to time. This does not mean taking sides with the army vis-à-vis the fragile civilian government of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. On the contrary, what is needed in Pakistan is a third option led by enlightened and progressive forces.

According to a story published in the prestigious The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday, “The Obama administration is demanding an explanation from Pakistan on how Osama bin Laden was able to hide in the country for so long before he was killed by US Special Forces.”

Hasan Askari-Rizvi, Pakistan’s top defence analyst, agrees that the Pakistan government will have to face tough questions. “The current strain and distrust that marks the relationship between Pakistan and the US will continue to persist and Washington may ask Islamabad to become vigilant for searching other senior al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders,” he told TSI.

Laden was hiding in a luxurious mansion in the vicinity of the Military Academy in Abbottabad, some 30 miles from capital Islamabad. John Brennan, a counter-terrorism adviser to the US President, told journalists at the White House: “People have been referring to this as hiding in plain sight. We are looking at how he was able to hide out there for so long.”

Barack Obama said: “The world is safer. It is a better place because of the death of Osama bin Laden.” The world might have become “safer” for US citizens, but not for the billions residing in other parts of the world because under one pretext or the other, consecutive US governments along with their allies have been attacking sovereign countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. Interestingly, their stated aim may be to democratise these countries, but the real purpose seems focused at their energy resources. The Guardian noted that “Although Obama, Hilary Clinton, the secretary of state, and Brennan expressed the importance of Pakistan in helping to fight al-Qaeda, the presence of Bin Laden so close to the capital and just streets away from the principal training ground for the country’s officer corps threatened to create a fresh rift in US-Pakistan relations.

According to it, “Members of Congress threatened to withhold economic aid to Pakistan over the affair,” The Guardian newspaper said.

Hasan Askari-Rizvi agrees. “The US will use economic assistance for building pressure on Pakistan by delaying assistance, raising the issues of accountability and how the funds are being used,” he states. “Carl Levin, a Democrat who heads the powerful Senate armed forces committee, reflected the scepticism in the US about Bin Laden’s ability to remain hidden in Pakistan,” said the Guardian story.

“I think the Pakistan Army and intelligence have a lot of questions to answer, given the location, the length of time and the apparent fact that this facility was actually built for Bin Laden and its closeness to the central location of the Pakistan Army,” he told a press conference, the Guardian newspaper said. “The US will step up pressure on Pakistan to hand over Taliban leader, Mullah Omar and Bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, if they are in Pakistan. The death of Bin Laden could also lead to a rethink of the scale of the US involvement in Afghanistan,” the newspaper further said.

However, despite threatening postures, the US leadership is eager to further use Pakistan with sops and doles, never mind if they never brought solace to 180 million people of this impoverished country and only served the interests of civil and military bureaucracy, landed aristocracy and elitist politicians.

“Clinton, anxious not to alienate a partner that may yet be needed for actions against al-Qaeda and the Taliban, emphasised America’s “close cooperation” with Pakistan. In fact, co-operation with Pakistan helped lead us to Bin Laden and the compound in which he lived,” the Guardian newspaper cited her as saying.

Which leads to a key question: If co-operation with Pakistan helped the US locate the compound in which Laden was hiding since long, then what is the justification of a threatening posture and a demand from Pakistan to explain as to how Laden was able to hide in the country for so long before he was killed by the US Special Forces? The demand is self-explanatory. Is it because the US knew where Laden was hiding and killed him as a ploy to ensure that President Obama wins a second term?

Says Imiaz Ali, senior journalist at The News, “It is not necessary that in the death of Osama, Obama will win the election. Bush Senior, despite winning the Gulf War, lost the elections in second term.”

The government of President Hamid Karzai, whose jurisdiction is limited to Kabul, is equally worried because once the US-led coalition forces withdraw from Afghanistan, it will not be able to resist the onslaught of the Taliban.

An Afghan government official has been cited to have said that he feared the death of Laden would give “justification for US’ premature disengagement from the region.” How long does the Afghan government want to rule on the crutches of the world’s sole superpower?

In fact, according to all indications, the US is eager to pull out from Afghanistan but wants an honourable exit and is already negotiating with “moderate” Taliban groups.

Despite spending billions of dollars in Afghanistan, the Americans have not been able to break the resistance of the Afghans. It brings back memories of the ill-planned Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan that relied on bad intelligence. The US had then quickly sided with the resistance forces and created monsters in Afghanistan.

These monsters are now threatening the very social fabric of Pakistani society in the form of suicide bombing, bomb blasts, sectarian strife and a plethora of other problems in a country where people are tolerant, peaceful and have respect for each other’s rituals.

Mutahir Ahmed, professor of International Relations at the University of Karachi and an expert on Afghanistan, is of the view that the military establishment in Pakistan will now have to face a tough time. “So far the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has not issued any statement. Since Musharraf ’s time, Pakistan has been in a state of denial and has claimed varyingly that either Osama is dead or he is not in Pakistan, but all high value al-Qaeda operatives were being apprehended from urban areas of Pakistan,” he said.

Adds Ahmed, “One wonders if the nuclear installations in Pakistan are any safer. Kahuta is not far from Abbottabad. If the Americans can intrude in Abbottabad violating Pakistan’s air space, why can’t they go further. India will also insist with greater vigour that Pakistan was involved in the Mumbai carnage.”

Moreover, the US seems to have ignored the interests of regional powers. Iran, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Central Asian Republics, Kuwait. etc, have vital interests in the region and nobody knows who is behind the suicide bombings and acts of terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan since these are sort of proxy wars.

Even in Karachi, the financial capital of Pakistan, target killings and suicide bombing have assumed routine proportions and every political party vehemently denies that it has anything to do with these incidents.

Apparently, sectarian outfits, funded by Middle Eastern countries, carry on such exercises and have been so conditioned since Zia’s era that they don’t even know that they are being used.

We want to break Western monopoly on awards

Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize, Surama Chaudhuri Memorial International Award, Manavata Vikas Award... an array of prestigious prizes instituted by IIPM is set to alter the international awards landscape for good.

What is the rationale behind the IIPM Awards for excellence in the fields of literature, arts, journalism and social work?

These awards are a logical development for IIPM. In our very first prospectus – the year was 1973 – we spelt out that skill development would be a key element in our course content, but that it certainly would not be the only element. We stressed on two other dimensions – fostering a sense of commitment to society and active application of arts and literature to life. Commitment to society is essential in order to create economic parameters that favour the people at large. National economic planning should be a core pursuit. If planning is market-oriented, then it is skewed in favour of those who control resources. For us, management education has always had these three distinct dimensions. A sense of ethics should underline distribution. It is also imperative to develop appreciation of arts and literature. The IIPM Awards for excellence follow from our third commitment.

You have described the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize as a challenge to the Nobel Prize. In what sense is that the case?

This award has been instituted as a move to take away the West’s exclusive power to decide what is good in literature, art and peace efforts. The Nobel Prize for literature has not always gone to great writers. The Peace Prize has been, in recent times, given to people who have committed genocide. Therefore, the idea is to institute an award comparable with the Nobel as a public demonstration of our opposition to the Western monopoly on awards for excellence in various fields. I see a shift from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It is happening in economics and planning. Why shouldn’t it also happen in the domain of awards? Our effort is to push an initiative based on that superstructure. We want to decisively intervene in the process of deciding on awards. We want to demonstrate that we are equal players.

So far the focus of the IIPM Awards seems to have been on Bengali literature. Will you be looking at recognising other literatures in the coming years?

Our focus is on literature, not on literature in any particular language. It is only by accident that Bengali literature dominates. The presence of Rabindranath Tagore and the influence he had on numerous writers in Bengal led to an explosion of great literature. The literature produced in Bengali has been of a very high quality. The dominance of Bengali stems partly from our acquaintance with the language and partly from our perception that many Bengali writers are comparable with the best in the world. They should have won the Nobel Prize. They did not because the awards mechanism was loaded against writers like them.

So, will you be giving the IIPM Awards to writers in other languages as well in the years ahead?
Of course, we would, without any hesitation. We would be proud indeed to discover and honour exceptional literary talent in other languages. We would, of course, need help from friends and experts in identifying the best writers in these languages. Once we have the guidance we need and a proper assessment system is in place, you will see the IIPM Awards going to more and more non-Bengali litterateurs.

And will you honour international writers as well?

Don’t be surprised if next year we choose an American or European writer for the Tagore Award.

How are the award winners chosen?

We have a small committee. We are in constant touch with people who are well-read and are aware of literary developments. We seek their opinion. They give us guidance. I myself have been a voracious reader since childhood.

What is the logic behind the big prize money on offer with these awards?

The Nobel Prize for literature this year will fetch the winner 1.08 million euros. Last year, the amount was 1 million euros. We wanted to match that. Veteran Bengali writer Ramapada Chowdhury has won the first Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize. The prize money is Rs 1 crore. This award will be handed over to the writer on May 9, 2011, Tagore’s 150th anniversary. To make a real impact, we wanted the prize money to be equivalent of the Nobel. A small amount would not have had the same effect. The Surama Chaudhuri Memorial International Award for Literature and Journalism is accompanied by an amount of $100,000. The first of this series of awards has been won by Afghan-origin writer Khaled Hosseini.

Are you satisfied with the general awareness about the IIPM Awards?

No, I am not. The importance of these awards has not been fully appreciated by the media. Either we do not have the kind of high quality media that we deserve or there is a deliberate conspiracy of silence. Take the case of the leading Bengali newspaper. The Surama Chaudhuri Memorial International Award, in monetary terms, is worth 80 times more than the annual award that this newspaper group gives but they do not want to share that information with their readers. They haven’t mentioned a word about Ramapada Chowdhury winning the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize although the publishing house owned by this media group has published most of the celebrated writer’s work. I can understand if they black out our awards. But why should they black out Ramapada Chowdhury? It is completely unacceptable.

There is obviously no award in India with this kind of prize money. How important is this for the profile of these awards?

Well, I do not believe that money alone can decide the worth of an award. An award acquires prestige if it is consistently given to deserving people. This prestige is built over time.

Obama’s war on Libya sans US Congress' approval is opening new doors of controversies

It's raining trouble for Obama and his administration. This time the reason being Barack Obama declaring Libya a no-fly-zone and allowing military intervention to free the country from the 'dictatorship' of Muammar Gaddafi.

And here is the twist: All these have been done without the approval of the US Congress which has consequently invited immense discontentment and dissatisfaction from Republicans as well as Democrats.

Apparently, any action taken by the American President, which might have a nationwide implication, cannot be taken without the knowledge of the US Congress. According to the US Constitution, the President is required to seek approval from the Congress before waging war against any foreign regime. Ron Paul, a Republican Congressman, sharply criticised Obama’s act, commenting that “the no-fly-zone over Libya is an act of war, and it needs approval from Congress.” Even Democrat Congressmen like Dennis Kucinich called Obama's move “impeachable.” So much so that a group of Liberal Democrats – Donna Edwards from Maryland, Jerrold Nadler from New York, Barbara Lee from California among others – have questioned “the Constitutionality of President’s actions.” The discontentment is rising with every additional American troop or fighter aircraft being sent to the Libyan mission.

Republican Senator Richard Lugar has raised high doubts on “US interests being served by Barack Obama’s actions.” From the economical point of view, this act on Libya would only cost the US further, which already suffers an extremely high fiscal deficit. The Iraq and Afghanistan costs are also far from over. This would also strengthen anti-American sentiment and protests on the Arab streets. With NATO announcing that the tentative duration of the no-fly-zone could be three months, further possibilities of civilian deaths and demolition of existing infrastructure loom large, which would cost the world massively again after the operation is over.

A recent CNN public poll revealed that seven out of ten Americans have supported US military action on Libya. But it is also true that three American cities have already gone to streets to protest... and there are predictions that more will soon follow. Strangely, Obama's recent acts do not differentiate him much from former American President George Bush – except that Bush was cunning enough to justify his actions more eloquently. Also, Bush had garnered criticism for much of his action post the Iraq 'victory', while Barack Obama is facing flak here and now. With latest news trickling in that Gadaffi might after all retain power, even the brownie points Obama wanted to gain from US citizens seem to be flittering away...
